GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

A true test of braking capability can only be made under the following roadway conditions:

    • The roadway is clean and dry
    • The roadway is reasonably smooth and level

The tires do not grip the road equally if any of the following roadway conditions are present:

    • A wet or greasy road
    • The road is covered with loose dirt

If these conditions are present, testing is adversely affected as indicated below:

    • When the roadway is crowned, the weight of the vehicle is thrown toward the wheels on one side.
    • When the roadway is too rough, the wheels will bounce.

Test the brakes at different vehicle speeds with both light and heavy pedal pressure. Because of a high deceleration capability, a firmer pedal may be felt at higher deceleration rates.
