The problems of steering, suspension, tires and wheels involve several systems. All systems must be considered when diagnosing a concern. Always road test a vehicle before beginning diagnosis in order to avoid using the wrong symptom. Proceed with the following preliminary checks and correct any of the substandard conditions which are found.

    • Inspect the tires for the wrong pressure and uneven wear.
    • Inspect the joints from the steering column to the steering gear for loose connectors or wear.
    • Inspect the front and rear suspension for loose, damaged or worn parts.
    • Inspect the steering gear for loose, damaged or worn parts.
    • Inspect for out-of-round or out-of-balance tires.
    • Inspect for bent wheels.
    • Inspect for loose and or rough bearings in the hub and bearing assembly.
    • Inspect the power steering system for leaks.
    • Inspect the power steering fluid level.
    • Inspect the pump drive belt for tension.
    • Inspect the joints of the intermediate shaft between the steering column and the gear for sticking and binding.
