GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

Important: When measuring the resistance to ground of a circuit or component, use a solid, unpainted chassis ground or the negative battery cable terminal.

A basic knowledge of the following items is important for the use of this section. (Without this basic knowledge, it will be difficult to use the diagnostic procedures contained in this section).

Basic Electrical Circuits

    • The basic theory of electricity
    • The meaning of the following terms:
      • Voltage
      • Current (amps)
      • Resistance (ohms)
    • Understanding of what happens in a circuit with an open or shorted wire
    • How to read and understand a wiring diagram

Use of Circuit Testing Tools

    • How to use jumper wires to bypass components in order to test circuits
    • How to use the High Impedance Multimeter (DMM) J 39200
    • How to measure the following quantities:
       - Voltage
       - Resistance
       - Current
    • How to use the meter controls

Refer to General Electrical Diagnosis in Wiring Systems for a review of the following items:

    • Basic electrical troubleshooting knowledge
    • Basic use of circuit testing tools

Additionally, General Motors Service Training offers electrical/electronic courses.
