Catalytic Converter Replacement L47

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle. Support the catalytic converter. Do not let the converter hang from the exhaust manifold rear pipe (Y-pipe).

  2. Object Number: 71759  Size: SH
  3. Remove the post converter oxygen sensor heat shield.
  4. Remove the oxygen sensors. Refer to Engine Controls for oxygen sensor replacement.

  5. Object Number: 43556  Size: SH
  6. Cut the intermediate pipe(2) at the converter. Cut the pipe as close to the weld as the tool will permit(1).

  7. Object Number: 71755  Size: SH
  8. Remove the exhaust manifold rear pipe flange bolts.

  9. Object Number: 71751  Size: SH
  10. Remove the catalytic converter.
  11. Remove portions of the converter outlet that remain in the intermediate pipe.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 71751  Size: SH
  1. Install the catalytic converter. Position the intermediate pipe for needed clearance during converter installation.
  2. Install the catalytic converter seal.

  3. Object Number: 71755  Size: SH
  4. Install the exhaust manifold rear pipe flange bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the rear pipe flange bolts to 24 N·m  (15 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.


    Object Number: 43554  Size: SH
  6. Install the U bolt type clamp.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the clamp nuts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  8. Install the oxygen sensor. Refer to Engine Controls.
  9. Install the oxygen sensor heat shield.

Catalytic Converter Replacement L36, L67 W/ Front Ex. Pipe

Removal Procedure

    Important: The front pipe and catalytic converter are serviced as an assembly. They are not serviced separately.

  1. Remove the oxygen sensor. Refer to Engine Controls for oxygen sensor replacement.
  2. Support the catalytic converter.

  3. Object Number: 43556  Size: SH
  4. Use the J 29800 in order to cut(1) the exhaust pipe(2).

  5. Object Number: 71749  Size: SH
  6. Remove the front catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold nuts and springs.
  7. Remove the seal.
  8. Remove the front exhaust pipe/catalytic converter assembly.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 71749  Size: SH
  1. Use the "U" bolt type clamp to install the front exhaust pipe/catalytic converter assembly. Position the clamp so that the nuts are toward the left side of the vehicle.
  2. Install the seal.

  3. Object Number: 43552  Size: SH
  4. Install the front catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold nuts and springs.
  5. Tighten

        • Tighten the front exhaust pipe to the manifold to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
        • Tighten the clamp nuts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure.   6. Install the oxygen sensor. Refer to Engine Controls.
