STARTER MOTOR RUNS CONTINUOUSLY

SUBJECT: STARTER MOTOR RUNS CONTINUOUSLY (REPLACE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH)

MODELS: 1995 OLDSMOBILE AURORA

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT ON THE STARTER MOTOR RUNNING CONTINUOUSLY. WHEN THE IGNITION SWITCH IS RETURNED TO THE "RUN" POSITION AFTER IT IS TURNED TO "CRANK", THE STARTER MOTOR MAY CONTINUE TO RUN. IT MAY NOT TURN OFF EVEN IF THE IGNITION SWITCH IS SET TO THE "OFF" POSITION.

CAUSE:

CONTACT OF THE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH PURPLE STARTER LEAD WITH A SHARP EDGE ON THE TRANSAXLE MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH STARTER LEAD.

CORRECTION:

DETERMINE IF THE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH IS DAMAGED AND CORRECT AS FOLLOWS:

1. DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.

2. LOCATE THE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH (SEE ILLUSTRATION). IT IS ON THE LEFT-HAND SIDE OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, MOUNTED ON THE TRANSAXLE IN THE AREA BELOW THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR. THE SWITCH IS ACCESSIBLE FROM ABOVE THE ENGINE WITHOUT PRELIMINARY DISASSEMBLY. ACCESS THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS ON THE SWITCH HARNESS AND STARTER LEAD FROM BENEATH THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.

NOTE: THE PURPLE STARTER LEAD MAY BE DISCONNECTED AT AN IN-LINE CONNECTOR CLOSE TO THE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH. THE PROCEDURES IN THIS BULLETIN DO NOT REQUIRE ACCESS TO THE STARTER MOTOR.

3. REMOVE THE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH USING AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ON-VEHICLE SERVICE PROCEDURES IN SECTION 7A2 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL. REFER TO THE TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH PARAGRAPH.

4. INSPECT THE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH HARNESS AS FOLLOWS:

(A) INSPECT THE PURPLE STARTER LEAD FOR CHAFING, CUT INSULATION OR ANY OTHER DAMAGE. IF DAMAGE EXISTS, REPLACE THE SWITCH (STEP 5).

(B) CHECK THAT THE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH HAS A FLEXIBLE CONDUIT AROUND THE PURPLE STARTER LEAD. IF NONE IS PRESENT, INSTALL A CONDUIT (STEP 6).

5. REPLACE THE PARK/NEUTRAL SWITCH, P/N 1994330, IF IT IS DAMAGED. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE SWITCH HARNESS OR STARTER LEAD.

NOTE: IF A NEW PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH OBTAINED AS A SERVICE PART DOES NOT HAVE FLEXIBLE CONDUIT ON THE PURPLE STARTER LEAD, INSTALL CONDUIT (STEP 6) BEFORE PROCEEDING.

6. IF THE SWITCH HARNESS AND PURPLE STARTER LEAD ARE GOOD BUT THE STARTER LEAD LACKS A FLEXIBLE CONDUIT, INSTALL CONDUIT ON THE STARTER LEAD. ORDER 0.25 IN. FLEXIBLE CONVOLUTED CONDUIT, GM P/N 12051375, (PACKARD P/N R-64496). AN 8 INCH LENGTH OF CONDUIT IS REQUIRED.

7. INSTALL THE PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH USING AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ON-VEHICLE SERVICE PROCEDURES IN SECTION 7A2 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL. REFER TO THE TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH PARAGRAPH.

8. RECONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.
