DEFINITION: The starter solenoid clicks but the engine does not crank or cranks slowly.

  1. Verify that battery is fully charged.
  2. Remove F/P INJ fuse.
  3. Connect the voltmeter to positive and negative battery terminals
  4. Measure voltage across battery terminals while cranking the engine.

Is the reading equal to or greater than the specified value?

9.6 V

Measure the voltage between the negative battery terminal and the engine block while cranking the engine.

Is the reading less than the specified value?

0.5 V

Go to Step 5

Load test the battery. Refer to Battery Load Test .

Is the battery OK?

Replace the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Cable .

Is the repair complete?

System OK

Measure the voltage between the positive battery terminal and solenoid terminal B while cranking the engine.

Is the reading less than the specified value?

0.5 V

Go to Step 6

Replace the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .
