Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle.
  2. Support the vehicle at the frame. A hoist must remain under the rear axle housing.
  3. Remove the rear wheels and the drums or calipers.

  4. Object Number: 1480  Size: SH
  5. Remove the lower shock absorber nuts and washers.
  6. Remove the lower shock absorbers from the anchor plates.
  7. Remove the bolts and retainers from the pinion flange.
  8. Important: Observe and reference mark the positions of all the driveline components relative to the propeller shaft and axles prior to disassembly. These components include the propeller shafts, the drive axles, the pinion flanges, and the output shafts. Reassemble all the components in the exact places from which you removed these parts. Follow any specifications, torque values, and measurements made prior to disassembly.

  9. Mark the propeller shaft and the pinion flange.
  10. Secure the propeller shaft out of the way in order to not put stress on the universal joints.

  11. Object Number: 1482  Size: SH
  12. Remove the brake lines at the axle housing.
  13. Disconnect the brake lines at the backing plates.
  14. Remove the propeller shaft.
  15. Disconnect the rear park brake cable(s) from the rear axle. Refer to Park Brake Cable Replacement in Park Brake.

  16. Object Number: 1484  Size: SH
  17. Remove the anchor plate nuts and washers.
  18. Remove the U-bolts and the anchor plates.

  19. Object Number: 1485  Size: SH
  20. Disconnect the vent hose from the axle housing.
  21. 15.1. Move the axle from above the springs.
    15.2. Lower the axle from the vehicle, using the hoist.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the axle into the vehicle using the hoist.

  2. Object Number: 1490  Size: SH
  3. Connect the vent hose to the axle housing.

  4. Object Number: 1487  Size: SH
  5. Install the U-bolts and the anchor plates.
  6. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the nuts and the washers.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).

  9. Connect the brake pipes to the backing plate.
  10. Connect the park brake cable(s). Refer to Park Brake Cable Replacement in Park Brake.
  11. Install the brake pipes at the axle housing.
  12. Bleed the brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding in Hydraulic Brakes.

  13. Object Number: 1483  Size: SH
  14. Line up the previously made marks on the propeller shaft with the marks on the pinion flange. Install the propeller shaft.
  15. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  16. Install the retainers and the bolts to the pinion flange.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  18. Install the shock absorbers to the anchor plates.
  19. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  20. Install the washers and the nuts.
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 84 N·m (62 lb ft).

  22. Install the rear drums or calipers and the wheels.
  23. Add lubricant to the axle housing to a level within 9.5 mm (3/8 in) of the filler plug hole.
