Installation Procedure

    Important:

       • Use the correct axle on the axle's corresponding side.
       • Do not damage the oil seal.

  7. Object Number: 9768 Size: SH

Important: When reusing the differential pinion shaft locking screw, coat the threads with Loctite 242 before reinstalling. The differential pinion shaft locking screws are coated with an adhesive which helps keep the screw from loosening in the case.

  8. Install the new lock bolt.
  9. Tighten
Tighten the lock bolt to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  10. Install the new gasket on the axle housing cover. Refer to Carrier Cover Gasket Replacement .
  11. Add the axle lubricant to a level of 9.5 mm (3/8 in) from the top of the fill plug hole.
