Removal Procedure

    Object Number: 141840  Size: SH
  1. Remove the front differential carrier underbody shield, if equipped.
  2. Remove the transfer case underbody shield, if equipped.
  3. Remove the left side bracket holding the front differential underbody shield.
  4. Remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.

  5. Object Number: 1497  Size: SH
  6. Check the pinion preload.
  7. 5.1. Place the torque wrench and socket on the pinion flange nut.
    5.2. Slowly turn the torque wrench clockwise while recording the preload.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the front propeller shaft.
  2. Install the left side bracket holding the front differential underbody shield.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the bracket bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).

  6. Install the transfer case underbody shield.
  7. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Install the transfer case underbody shield bolts.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the shield bolts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  10. Install the front differential carrier underbody shield.

Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure.   12. Install the differential carrier underbody shield bolts.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the differential carrier underbody shield bolts to 25 N·m (19 lb ft).
