Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 21474-01 Control Arm Bushing Service Set

  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
  2. Support the vehicle with safety stands.
  3. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  4. Important: Support the rear axle.

  5. Remove the fuel tank on pickups. Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement in Engine Controls-2.2, or Fuel Tank Replacement in Engine Controls-4.3.

  6. Object Number: 3243  Size: SH
  7. Remove the following parts:
  8. • The upper shackle bolt
    • The nut
    • The flat washers
  9. Loosen the lower shackle bolt at the spring.
  10. Leave the bolt attached.

  11. Lower the axle until there is enough clearance to remove the shackle bushing.
  12. Use a blunt punch to straighten out the bushing flange that comes through the inner frame.
  13. Important: Replace both of the shackle bushings while the fuel tank is off the vehicle.

  14. Remove the shackle bushing using J 21474-01 .

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 228361  Size: SH
  1. Install the shackle bushing. A new shackle bushing must be used.
  2. Use the tools as shown.

  3. Pull the bushing into the frame rail until the flanged portion of the bushing is flush with the rail.
  4. Stake the shackle bushing inner flange.
  5. Raise the axle into position.

  7. Install the following parts:
  8. • The frame to the shackle bolt
    • The washers
    • The nut
    • Do not tighten the nut.
  9. Repeat steps 1 through 6 for the other bushings.

  10. Object Number: 3248  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  11. Support the axle so that there is a distance of 170 mm ± 6 mm (6.7 in ± 0.24 in) between the axle tube and the metal surface of the bumper bracket (1).
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the rear shackle nuts to 122 N·m (89 lb ft).

  13. Install the fuel tank on pickups. Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement in Engine Controls-2.2, or Fuel Tank Replacement in Engine Controls-4.3.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Connect the battery negative cable.
