Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 22794 Spark Plug Port Adapter
    • J 5892-D Valve Spring Compressor

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .

  4. Remove the valve rocker arm cover from the cylinder head.
  5. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .

  6. Remove both heater hoses from the heater core.

  8. Remove the EGR valve from the engine.
  9. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Replacement .

  10. Remove the EGR valve adapter from the rear of the cylinder head.

  11. Object Number: 175520  Size: SH
  12. Remove the spark plugs from the cylinder head.
  13. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement .

  14. Remove the valve rocker arm(s) from the cylinder head.
  15. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Removal .

  16. Install the J 22794 to the spark plug hole in the cylinder head.
  17. Apply compressed air in order to hold the valve in place.
  18. Tap the valve retainer with a soft-faced hammer in order to loosen the valve keys.

  20. Install an 8 mm by 65 mm bolt with a hardened washer into the rocker arm bolt hole.
  21. Place the J 5892-D over the valve spring.
  22. Compress the valve spring with the J 5892-D .

  24. Remove the valve keys.
  25. Carefully release the spring tension.
  26. Remove the J 5892-D .

  28. Remove the valve spring cap.

  29. Object Number: 3689  Size: SH
  30. Remove the valve spring.

  32. Remove the valve stem oil seal.

  33. Object Number: 3692  Size: SH
  34. Remove the valve spring seat.
  35. Clean and inspect all parts.
  36. Refer to Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 22794 Spark Plug Port Adapter
    • J 5892-D Valve Spring Compressor

  1. Lubricate the valve spring seal with engine oil in order to make assembly easier.
  2. Install the valve spring seat.

  3. Object Number: 3688  Size: SH
  4. Install the new valve stem oil seal.

  5. Object Number: 3689  Size: SH
  6. Set the valve spring in place.

  7. Object Number: 3690  Size: SH
  8. Set the valve spring cap in place.

  9. Object Number: 1964  Size: SH
  10. Compress the valve spring with the J 5892-D .

  11. Object Number: 3691  Size: SH
  12. With air pressure still applied, install the valve keys. Use grease in order to hold the valve keys in place.
  13. Remove the J 5892-D from the valve spring.
  14. Remove the J 22794 from the cylinder head.
  15. Remove the 8 mm by 65 mm bolt and washer.

  17. Install the valve rocker arms cylinder head.
  18. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  19. Install the spark plugs to the cylinder head.
  20. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement .

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  21. Install the EGR valve adapter with a NEW gasket on the rear of the cylinder head.
  22. Tighten
    Tighten the four bolts to 20 N·m (14 lb ft).

  23. Install the EGR valve.
  24. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Replacement .

  25. Install both heater hoses on to the heater core.

  26. Object Number: 175510  Size: SH
  27. Install the valve rocker arm cover.
  28. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement .

  29. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  30. Connect the battery negative cable.
