Is the battery properly charged?

Are there any other engine problems that could affect starting?

Go to Engine Check

Go to Step 4

  1. Move ignition switch to the start position.
  2. Measure voltage between the terminals on the battery.

Is the voltage reading greater than the value after 15 seconds?

9.6V

Go to Step 5

Go to Step 7

Measure voltage between the negative battery terminal and the engine block.

Is the voltage reading less than the value?

0.5V

Go to Step 6

Go to Step 8

Measure voltage between starter solenoid terminal B and RED (32) 2.2L Engine/RED (19) 4.3L Engine wire at the battery.

Is the voltage reading more than the value?

9.0V

Go to Step 9

Go to Step 10

Perform battery load test. Refer to battery load Test.

If OK, repair starter motor.

Replace negative battery cable.

Repair starter motor.

  1. Clean and tighten positive battery terminals.
  2. Check starter operation.
  3. If system still does not operate properly, replace positive battery cable.
