Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 35833 Speedometer Gear Bushing Remover
    •  J 44708 Rear Seal Installer
    •  J 8092 Universal Driving Handle
  1. Drain the transmission oil. Refer to Transmission Oil Changing .
  2. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to the proper procedure:
  3. •  One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
    •  Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
    •  Three-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
  4. Remove the parking brake from the transmission, if necessary. Refer to Park Brake Cable Replacement in Park Brake.

  6. Remove the propeller shaft transmission yoke nuts.
  7. Remove the propeller shaft transmission yoke.

  8. Object Number: 641689  Size: SH
  9. Remove the speedometer sensor from the speedometer bushing.

  10. Object Number: 641692  Size: SH
  11. Use suitable tool to prevent the mainshaft from turning.
  12. Using a suitable chisel bend the stake points on the flange nut out of the grooves.

  14. Remove the yoke flange nut.
  15. Remove the flange nut O-ring seal and discard.
  16. Remove the yoke.

  18. Remove the setscrew for the speedometer gear bushing.
  19. Using the  (1) remove the speedometer gear bushing.

  20. Object Number: 642673  Size: SH
  21. Remove the speedometer driven gear (1) from the speedometer drive bushing (3).
  22. Remove and discard the O-ring (2) from the speedometer drive bushing (3).

  23. Object Number: 641704  Size: SH
  24. Remove the transmission extension bolts.
  25. Remove the transmission extension and the gasket.

  26. Object Number: 649291  Size: SH
  27. Remove the mainshaft rear bearing oil seal from the transmission extension using a hammer and a punch.
  28. Clean the gasket material from the gasket surfaces.
  29. Clean the rear bearing cover with clean solvent.
  30. Inspect the gasket surface for scratches and nicks.
  31. Inspect the seal surface for the following conditions:
  32. • Scratches
    • Rust
    • General wear
  33. Inspect the bearing retainer for damage.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 649292  Size: SH
  1. Install the mainshaft rear bearing oil seal usingJ 44708 and J 8092 in the transmission extension. The open side of the seal goes toward the tool.

  2. Object Number: 641704  Size: SH
  3. Install the transmission extension and gasket.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the transmission extension bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission extension bolts to 71 N·m (52 lb ft).

  7. Install the speedometer driven gear (1) in the transmission extension.
  8. Install a NEW O-ring (2) seal on the speedometer drive bushing (3).
  9. Install the speedometer drive bushing.
  10. Install the speedometer drive bushing setscrew.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the speedometer drive bushing setscrew to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  12. Install the yoke.
  13. Install a NEW O-ring seal. Lubricate lightly with oil.
  14. Use suitable tool to prevent the mainshaft from turning.
  15. Install the yoke flange nut.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the yoke flange nut to 800 N·m (560 lb ft).

  17. Stake the nut at the flat areas on the mainshaft.

  19. IInstall the speed sensor harness.
  20. Install the parking brake to the transmission. Refer to Park Brake Cable Replacement in Park Brake.
  21. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to the proper procedure:
  22. •  One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
    •  Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
    •  Three-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
  23. Fill the transmission with transmission oil. Refer to Transmission Oil Changing .
