Normal Vehicle Use
The maintenance instructions contained in the maintenance schedule are based on the assumption that the vehicle will be used for the following reasons:
| • | To carry passengers and cargo within the limitation indicated on the tire placard located on the edge of the driver's door. |
| • | To be driven on reasonable road surfaces and within legal operating limits. |
Explanation of Scheduled Maintenance Services
The services listed in the maintenance schedule are further explained below. Always use the proper fluids, lubricants, and service replacement parts for the vehicle.
Drive Belt Inspection
Inspect the drive belts for cracks, fraying, wear and proper tension every 12 000 km (7,500 mi) or every 6 months, whichever comes first. Adjust or replace the belt as needed.
Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
If the vehicle is operated under any of the following conditions, change the engine oil and the oil filter every 6 000 km (3,750 mi) or every 3 months, whichever comes first.
| • | Short distance driving |
| • | Extensive idling |
| • | Driving on dirty roads |
If none of the above conditions apply, change the engine oil and the oil filter every 12 000 km (7,500 mi) or every 6 months, whichever comes first.
API Classifications of Engine Oil
The International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) and American Petroleum Institute (API) classifies engine oils according to their performance quality. Always use oil rated API-SL (ILSAC GF-III) or better.
Engine Oil Viscosity
Notice: Using engine oils of any viscosity other than those viscosities recommended could result in engine damage.
Engine oil viscosity has an effect on fuel economy and cold weather operation. Lower viscosity engine oils can provide better fuel economy and cold weather performance; however, higher temperature weather conditions require higher viscosity engine oils for satisfactory lubrication.
Cooling System Service
Inspect the engine coolant every 12 000 km (7,500 mi) or every 6 months, whichever comes first. Change the engine coolant every 48 000 km (30,000 mi) or every 24 months, whichever comes first.
Drain, flush and refill the system with new coolant. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations .
Fuel Filter Service
Inspect the engine fuel filter every 48 000 km (30,000 mi).
Replace the engine fuel filter every 144 000 km (90,000 mi).
Air Cleaner Element Replacement
When driving on dusty roads, inspect the air cleaner element every 6 000 km (3,750 mi) or every 3 months, whichever comes first. Otherwise inspect the air cleaner element every 12 000 km (7,500 mi) or every 6 months, whichever comes first.
Replace the air cleaner element every 48 000 km (30,000 mi). Replace the element sooner when driving on dusty roads.
Throttle Body Mounting Bolt Torque
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
Inspect the torque of the mounting bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the throttle body mounting bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
Spark Plug Replacement
Inspect the spark plugs every 24 000 km (15,000 mi). Replace the spark plugs with the same type every 48 000 km (30,000 mi).
Spark Plug Wire Replacement
Clean and inspect the spark plug wires for burns, cracks or other damage. Inspect the spark plug wire boots for proper fit at the DIS module and at the spark plugs. Replace the spark plug wires every 96 000 km (60,000 mi). Replace the spark plug wires sooner if damage is evident.
Brake System Service
Inspect the disc brake pads every 12 000 km (7,500 mi) or every 6 months, whichever comes first. Inspect the pad thickness carefully. If the pads are not expected to last to the next scheduled maintenance service, replace the pads. Inspect the breather hole in the brake fluid reservoir cap. Ensure the breather hole is free from dirt and the passage is open.
More frequent service is necessary if the vehicle is operated under any of the following conditions:
| • | Short distance driving |
| • | Extensive idling |
| • | Frequent low speed operation in stop-and-go traffic |
| • | Driving on dusty roads |
If the vehicle is operated regularly in hilly or mountainous terrain, change the brake fluid every 24 000 km (15,000 mi) or every 12 months, whichever comes first. Otherwise change the brake fluid every 48 000 km (30,000 mi) or every 24 months, whichever comes first.
Transaxle Service
Inspect the manual transaxle fluid every 48 000 km (30,000 mi). The manual transaxle fluid does not require changing.
Inspect the automatic transaxle fluid every 24 000 km (15,000 mi). If the vehicle is operated under any of the following conditions, change the automatic transaxle fluid every 60 000 km (37,500 mi):
| • | In heavy city traffic where the outside temperature regularly exceeds 32°C (90°F) |
| • | In hilly or mountainous terrain |
| • | In taxi, police, or delivery service |
Tire and Wheel Inspection and Rotation
Measure and adjust the tire inflation pressure every 12 000 km (7,500 mi) or every 6 months, whichever comes first.
Inspect the tires for abnormal wear or damage. To equalize wear and obtain maximum tire life, rotate the tires every 12 000 km (7,500 mi). If irregular or premature wear exists, measure the wheel alignment and inspect for damaged wheels. While the tires and wheels are removed, inspect the brakes. Refer to Owner Checks and Services .

For DEX-COOL® antifreeze inspect the engine coolant every 10,000 km (6,000 mi) or every 6 months, whichever comes first. Change the engine coolant every 240,000 km (150,000 mi) or every 5 years, whichever comes first.
Drain, flush and refill the system with new coolant. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations.
Fuel Filter Service
Replace the engine fuel filter every 40,000 km (24,000 mi).
Air Cleaner Element Replacement
When driving on dusty roads, inspect the air cleaner element every 5,000 km (3,000 mi) or every 3 months, whichever comes first. Otherwise inspect the air cleaner element every 10,000 km (6,000 mi) or every 6 months, whichever comes first.
Replace the air cleaner element every 40,000 km (24,000 mi). Replace the element sooner when driving on dusty roads.

Inspect the breather hole in the brake fluid reservoir cap to be sure it is free from dirt and the passage is open.
Transaxle Service
The manual transaxle fluid does not require changing. For automatic transaxles, refer to Maintenance Schedule.
Tire and Wheel Inspection and Rotation
Check the tires for abnormal wear or damage. To equalize wear and obtain maximum tire life, rotate the tires. If irregular or premature wear exists, measure the wheel alignment and inspect for damaged wheels. While the tires and wheels are removed, inspect the brakes. Refer to Owner Checks and Services.
