Engine Flywheel Cleaning and Inspection Automatic Transmission
Cleaning Procedure
- Clean the engine flywheel in solvent.
Caution: Refer to Safety Glasses Caution in the Preface section.
- Dry the engine flywheel with compressed air.
Inspection Procedure
- Inspect the engine flywheel for the following conditions:
• | Stress cracks around the engine flywheel-to-torque converter mounting
bolt hole locations (1) and/or engine flywheel-to-crankshaft (2 and
4) |
| Important: DO NOT attempt to repair the welded areas
that retain the ring gear to the engine flywheel plate. Install a new engine flywheel.

• | Cracks at welded areas that retain the ring gear onto the engine flywheel (3) |
• | Damaged or missing ring gear teeth (5) |
- Replace the engine flywheel as necessary.

Cleaning Procedure
- Clean the engine flywheel in solvent.
Caution: Refer to Safety Glasses Caution in the Preface section.
- Dry the engine flywheel with compressed air.
Inspection Procedure
- Inspect the manual transmission engine flywheel for the following conditions:
• | Missing and/or damaged alignment pins (1) |
• | Damaged threaded holes (2) |
• | Scoring or grooves (4) |
• | Rust or other surface damaged (5) |
• | Damaged ring gear teeth (6) |
• | Loose or incorrectly positioned ring gear |
• | The ring gear has
an interference fit onto the engine flywheel and should be positioned completely against
the flange of the engine flywheel (7). |
- Replace the engine flywheel as necessary.
