A noise or vibration that is noticeable when the vehicle is in motion may not be the result of the transmission.

If noise or vibration is noticeable in Park and Neutral with the engine at idle, but is less noticeable as engine RPM increases, the cause may be from poor engine performance.

  1. Inspect the tires for the following:
  2. • Uneven wear
    • Imbalance
    • Mixed sizes
    • Mixed radial tire tread patterns--Refer to General Tire Diagnosis.
  3. Inspect the suspension components for the following:
  4. • Alignment and wear
    • Loose fasteners
  5. Inspect the engine and transmission mounts for damage and loose bolts.
  6. Inspect the transmission case mounting holes for the following:
  7. • Missing bolts, nuts, and studs
    • Stripped threads
    • Cracks
  8. Inspect the flexplate for the following:
  9. • Missing or loose bolts
    • Cracks
    • Imbalance
  10. Inspect the torque converter for the following:
  11. • Missing or loose bolts or lugs
    • Missing or loose balance weights
    • Imbalance
