Makes 🢒 Geo 🢒 1996 🢒 Tracker - 2WD 🢒 Transmission/Transaxle 🢒 Automatic Transmission - 4 Speed-M41 🢒 Transmission Cooler Pipes and Hoses Replacement

Removal Procedure
  1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the 4 bolts.
  3. Remove the front skid plate.
  4. Place a drain pan or suitable container under the transmission cooler hoses.

  5. Remove the 2 screws from the cooler hose retainer clamps (2).
  6. Remove the cooler hoses from the cooler hose retainer clamps.
  7. Remove the following items from the transmission cooler:
    8. • The 2 inlet hose clamps
    • The 2 outlet hose clamps
    • The transmission cooler hoses

  8. Remove the following items from the inlet and outlet cooler pipes at the transmission:
    9. • The inlet hose clamps (3)
    • The 2 outlet hose clamps (3)
    • The transmission cooler hoses (1, 2)
  9. Place a drain pan or suitable container under the transmission cooler pipes.

  10. Remove the 1 bolt and the cooler pipe clamp (3) from the transmission.
  11. Remove the inlet and the outlet transmission cooler pipes (2, 1) from the transmission by loosening both of the flare nuts at the cooler pipe fittings.
  12. Remove the drain pan from under the vehicle.
  13. Inspect the transmission cooler pipes for kinks or other damage. Replace the cooler pipes as necessary.
  14. Inspect the transmission cooler hoses for leaks or damage. Replace the cooler hoses as necessary.
  15. Inspect the cooler pipe flare nuts for damage. Replace the nuts as necessary.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 166747 Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Install the inlet and the outlet transmission cooler pipes (1, 2) to the transmission by threading both of the flare nuts into the cooler pipe fittings (5).

    2. Tighten
    Tighten the cooler pipe flare nuts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  2. Install the cooler pipe clamp (2) to the transmission cooler (1) pipe bracket.
  3. Secure the cooler pipe clamp with one bolt.

    4. Tighten
    Tighten the cooler pipe clamp bolt to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

  4. Install the transmission cooler hoses to the inlet (1) and the outlet (2) cooler pipes at the transmission.
  5. Secure the transmission cooler hoses with the 2 inlet and outlet hose clamps (3).

  6. Install the transmission cooler hoses to the transmission cooler (1).
  7. Secure the transmission cooler hoses with the 2 inlet and outlet hose clamps (2).
  8. Install the transmission cooler hoses to the cooler hose retainer clamps.
  9. Secure the transmission cooler hoses with the 2 screws.
  10. Install the front skid plate to the vehicle.
  11. Secure the front skid plate with the 4 bolts.

    12. Tighten
    Tighten the front skid plate bolts to 54 N·m (40 lb ft).

  12. Lower the vehicle.
