Circuit/System Description

The Bluetooth Module is a cellular device that is powered by battery positive voltage, Ignition I voltage and ground from a patch harness connected between the radio connectors. It allows a cordless link between a cellular telephone and the vehicle Bluetooth communication system. The Bluetooth Module is not connected to the GMLAN system. It communicates with the cellular telephone via low-power radio waves. Due to the low power of the signal, approximately 1 milliwatt, a cellular telephone must be within 10 meters (32 feet) of the vehicle's Bluetooth module to connect an operate.

Diagnostic Aids

The following is a brief description of potential causes which may aid in diagnosis:

    • Ignition is turned OFF. Make sure to turn ON ignition when using Bluetooth communication.
    • The cellular phone is not paired to the Bluetooth module. Make sure to pair the cellular phone to the Bluetooth module. Refer to Bluetooth Communication Description and Operation.
    • The Bluetooth communication is already connected to another paired cellular phone. Make sure to turn OFF other paired cellular phone(s) in the vehicle.
    • Automatic connection not set on cellular phone. Make sure authorised connection is enabled for Bluetooth communication. Refer to owner’s handbook of the cellular phone.
    • The cellular phone is not supported.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Ignition ON, Radio On, press the Bluetooth button 4 times. A series of chimes must be heard from the radio speakers.

2. Ignition ON, activate the Bluetooth function on a cellular telephone with a known to be operating Bluetooth function, and search for Bluetooth devices. The cellular phone must be able to pick up a device labeled "GM.BT."

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the connector at the Bluetooth module.
  2. Test for less than 1.0 ohm between the ground circuit terminal 15 and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified value, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  4. Ignition OFF, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 8 and ground.
  5. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  6. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ignition circuit terminal 7 and ground.
  7. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  8. Ignition OFF, connect the connector at the Bluetooth module.
  9. Ignition OFF, disconnect the Bluetooth patch harness connector X3 at the Radio.
  10. Ignition ON, test for 3.5-4.5 volts between the following terminals:
  11. • 4 and ground
    • 5 and ground
If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage.
If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
If the circuit tests normal, replace the Bluetooth module.
  12. Ignition OFF, connect the Bluetooth patch harness connector X3 at the Radio.
  13. Ignition OFF, disconnect the connector at the Bluetooth microphone.
  14. Ignition ON, test for 2.5-3.5 volts between the signal circuit terminal 3 and ground.
  15. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage.
If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
If the circuit tests normal, test the Bluetooth switch.
  16. If all tests are normal and a cellular telephone with a known to be operating and supported Bluetooth function fail to pair or communicate, replace the Bluetooth module.

Component Testing

Bluetooth Switch Tests

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the connector at the Bluetooth switch.
  2. Test for infinite resistance between the following terminals:
  3. • 3 and 1
    • 3 and 2
If not the specified value, replace the Bluetooth switch.
  4. Bluetooth switch pressed, test for 650- 700 Ohms between terminals 3 and 1.
  5. If the resistance is not within the specified range, replace the Bluetooth switch.
  6. Bluetooth switch pressed, test for 6.2-6.8 k/Ohms between terminals 3 and 2.
  7. If the resistance is not within the specified range, replace the Bluetooth switch.

Repair Instructions

For component removal and installation refer to the accessory fitting instructions. Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
