Customer Satisfaction - Engine Oil Cooler Hose Contact

Subject:00109 -- Engine Oil Cooler Hose Contact

Models:2001 Chevrolet and GMC S Pickup Trucks
Equipped with V6 Engine (L35) -- Shreveport Only

Condition

General Motors has decided that certain 2001 Chevrolet and GMC S pickup trucks built at Shreveport Assembly Plant and equipped with a V6 engine (L35) may have been built with an incorrectly oriented engine oil cooler hose. If the oil cooler hose contacts the rotating engine crankshaft pulley, the rubbing action may create a hole in the hose resulting in an engine oil leak from the hose.

Correction

Dealers are to inspect the oil cooler hose to ensure the proper orientation, and reorient the hose if necessary. In addition, dealers are to inspect for damage of the hose, and install a new hose, if damage is found.

Vehicles Involved

Involved are certain 2001 Chevrolet and GMC S pickup trucks built at Shreveport Assembly Plant, equipped with a V6 engine (L35), and built within these VIN breakpoints:

Service Procedure

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  2. Inspect the engine oil cooler hose for a minimum of 25mm (1 in) clearance between the hose and the crankshaft pulley, and for damage to the hose.
  3.  - If the clearance is less than 25mm (1 in) and the hose is not damaged, proceed to Step 3 and reposition the hose.
     - If the hose is damaged, proceed to the Oil Cooler Hose Replacement Procedure and replace the oil cooler hose.
     - If no damage is found and the clearance is within specification, no further action is required. Install the GM Campaign Identification Label.
  4. Remove the bolt attaching the support clamp on the pipes at the engine oil pan and rotate the inboard pipe at the crimped end, by hand, to obtain the minimum clearance of 25mm (1 in).
  5. If you are unable to rotate the pipe by hand, wrap the pipe with a rag to protect the coating of the pipe, and rotate the pipe with a pair of pliers to obtain the minimum clearance of 25mm (1 in).
  6. Reinstall the support clamp attaching bolt.
  7. Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Install the GM Campaign Identification Label.

Oil Cooler Hose Replacement Procedure

  1. Remove the engine oil cooler lines support clamp bolt.
  2. Important: Have a drain pan ready for the engine oil to drain into.

  3. Remove the bolt that attaches the engine oil cooler lines to the oil filter adapter.
  4. Hold the cooler lines below the bottom of the radiator to drain the engine oil.
  5. Remove and discard the seals.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  8. Remove the engine oil cooler line retaining rings from the quick connectors at the radiator. Using a bent-tip screwdriver or equivalent, pull on one of the open ends of the retaining rings in order to rotate it. Rotate around the quick connector until the retaining ring is out of position and can be completely removed. Discard the retaining rings.
  9. Remove the engine oil cooler lines from the quick connectors at the radiator. Pull the lines straight out from the connectors.
  10. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  11. Remove the engine oil cooler lines from the vehicle.
  12. Install the engine oil cooler lines into the vehicle.
  13. Install new seals on the engine oil cooler lines at the oil filter adapter ends.
  14. Install the bolt that attaches the engine oil cooler lines to the engine oil filter adapter.
  15. Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).

  16. Install the attaching bolt and the clamp. Maintain a minimum clearance of 25mm (1 in) between the hose and the crankshaft pulley.
  17. Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  18. Lower the vehicle.
  19. Important: Do not install the new retaining ring onto the fitting by pushing the retaining ring down over the fitting.

  20. Install a new retaining ring into each quick connector at the radiator. Hook one of the open ends of the retaining ring into one of the slots in the quick connector. Rotate the retaining ring around the connector until the ring is positioned with all 3 ears through the 3 slots. Ensure the 3 retaining ring ears can be seen from inside of the connector, and the retaining ring can move freely in the slots.
  21. Install the engine oil cooler lines into the quick connectors at the radiator until a click is heard or felt. Pull back on the lines to ensure proper connection.
  22. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  23. Check and fill the engine oil to the proper level.
  24. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  25. Install the GM Campaign Identification Label.

Campaign Identification Label

Place a Campaign Identification Label on each vehicle corrected in accordance with the instructions outlined in this Product Campaign Bulletin. Each label provides a space to include the campaign number and the five (5) digit dealer code of the dealer performing the campaign service. This information may be inserted with a typewriter or a ball point pen.

Put the Campaign Identification Label on a clean and dry surface of the radiator core support in an area that will be visible to people servicing the vehicle. When installing the Campaign Identification Label, be sure to pull the tab to allow the adhesion of the clear protective covering. Additional Campaign Identification Labels for US dealers can be obtained from Dealer Support Materials by calling 1-888-549-6152 (Monday-Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm EST). Ask for Item Number S-1015 when ordering.
