- Install the lower windshield
supports.
- Install the spacers and the VIN plate filler strip.
- With the aid of an assistant,
dry fit the windshield in the opening in order to determine the correct way
to position the windshield in the opening.
- Use masking tape in order to mark the location of the windshield
in the opening.
- Slit the masking tape at the top edge of the windshield.
- Remove the windshield from the opening.
- Place the windshield inside up on a clean, protected surface.
Important: If corrosion of the pinchweld flange is present, or if sheet metal repairs
or replacements are required, the pinchweld flange must be refinished in order
to present a clean primer only surface.
- If paint repairs are required, mask the flange bonding area prior to
applying the color coat in order to provide a clean primer only surface.
- If you are performing the extended method of installation, perform
the following steps:
9.1. | Shake pinchweld number 3 (black) well. |
9.2. | Use masking tape in order to mark the location of the windshield
in the opening. |
- After repairing the opening
as indicated, perform the following steps:
- Shake pinchweld primer number 3 (black) well.
- Allow the primer to dry for approximately 10 minutes.
- Use a new dauber in order
to apply the primer to the primed surface of the flange in the bonding area.
- Allow the primer to dry for approximately 10 minutes.
- If you reuse the original windshield, use a utility knife in order
to remove any existing urethane adhesive from the windshield edge and
surface.
- Install the windshield reveal molding to the top edge of the windshield
if you use the original windshield reveal molding (or new production type
windshield reveal molding).
- Install the new acoustic strip if damaged.
- If you use the extended
method, perform the following steps:
18.1. | Apply a dam material, such as Norton Windshield Dam Replacement
or equivalent to approximately 12 mm (1/2-5/8 in) from
the outer edge of the window. |
18.2. | Apply the dam material around the entire perimeter of the windshield
in order to control urethane squeeze out. |
18.3. | Use a new dauber in order to apply glass prep number 1
(clear) approximately 10-16 mm (3/8-5/8 in) around
the entire perimeter of the inner surface. |
Important: Use care when applying the windshield prep number 1 (clear) in
order to prevent the windshield prep from running into the vision area of
the windshield. This primer dries almost instantly, but may stain
the viewing area of the windshield if not applied evenly.
- Apply windshield prep number 1 (clear):
19.1. | Use a new dauber in order to apply glass prep number 1
(clear) approximately 10-16 mm (3/8-5/8 in) around
the entire perimeter of the inner surface. |
19.2. | Apply glass prep number 1 (clear) to any exposed edges
of the window. |
19.3. | Wipe the area dry with a clean cloth. |
- Shake windshield primer number 2 (black) well.
- Use a new dauber in order
to apply the primer to the same areas that windshield prep number 1
(clear) was applied to.
- Allow the primer to dry for approximately 6-10 minutes.
Important: In order to properly cure the urethane, observe the following:
• | Allow the vehicle to remain at room temperature (22°C or 72°F)
at 30 percent relative humidity for a minimum of 6 hours. |
| Partially lower a door window in order to prevent pressure buildups
when closing doors before the urethane adhesive cures. |
• | Do not drive the vehicle until the urethane adhesive is cured
(minimum of 6 hours at room temperature). |
• | Do not use compressed air in order to dry the urethane adhesive. |
- If you use the short method, cut the tip of the applicator nozzle in
order to provide a bead of 6 mm (1/4 in) in diameter.
- If you use the extended method, cut the applicator nozzle in order
to provide a bead of approximately 14.5 mm (0.57 in)
in diameter.
- Apply a smooth, continuous
bead of urethane adhesive in (1) around the edge of the windshield (3) where
the primer was applied.
• | When using the short method, apply the urethane adhesive to the
existing bead of urethane adhesive on the body. |
• | When using the extended method, use the edge of the windshield
or the inside edge of the windshield reveal molding (in certain cases) as
a guide for the nozzle in order to apply the urethane adhesive to the
inner surface of the windshield. |
- Use rubber suction cups, along with the aid of a helper, in order
to install the windshield into the opening.
- Place the windshield on
the lower supports.
- Align the tape lines on the windshield and the body pillar.
- Press the windshield firmly into place.
- Tape the windshield to the body in order to minimize movement.
- Clean up any excess urethane that may have squeezed out from the
body.
- Use a soft spray in order to watertest the windshield immediately.
Warm or hot water is preferred in order to accelerate the cure of the
adhesive. Do not direct a hard stream of high pressure at the fresh urethane
adhesive.
- Inspect the windshield
for leaks. If any leaks are found, use a plastic paddle in order to apply
extra urethane adhesive at the leak point. Retest the windshield for leaks.
- Install the windshield reveal molding.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the windshield
side reveal molding screws.
Tighten
Tighten the windshield side reveal screws to 2 N·m(18 lb in).
- Install the windshield frame filler panel with two screws.
Tighten
Tighten the windshield frame filler panel screws to 2 N·m(18 lb in).
- Install the door sealing weatherstrip to the upper pinchweld flange.
- Install the air inlet grille. Refer to
Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement
in Body Front End.
- Install the antenna, if equipped.
Radio Antenna Replacement
.
- Install the windshield wiper arms. Refer to
Windshield Wiper Arm Replacement
in Wiper/Washer System.
- Remove the tape from the painted surfaces.
