Steering Gear Worm Gear Adjuster Seal and Stub Shaft Bearing Replacement P32

Disassembly Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 42882 Adjuster Nut Socket
    • J 6222-A Shaft Seal Protector

    Object Number: 446277  Size: SH
  1. Remove the coupling shield retainer and lock nut (3) from the adjuster nut assembly using a drift (2) and a hammer (1).
  2. Place J 6222-A over the end of the stub shaft.

  3. Object Number: 446331  Size: SH
  4. Remove the adjuster nut assembly (1) from the steering gear housing using J 42882 .

  5. Object Number: 447005  Size: SH
  6. Remove the thrust support assembly (1) from the steering gear housing.
  7. Remove the O-ring seal (2).

Assembly Procedure

    Object Number: 447005  Size: SH

    Important: Install a new O-ring seal each time the thrust support assembly is removed from the steering gear.

  1. Lubricate the new O-ring seal (2).
  2. Install the new O-ring seal (2).
  3. Install the thrust support assembly (1).

  4. Object Number: 446331  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Connect the adjuster nut assembly (1) to the steering gear housing using J 42882 .
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the adjuster nut assembly (1) to 28-31 N·m (21-23 lb ft) and back off 15 degrees-25 degrees.

  7. Install the coupling shield retainer and lock nut (2) to the adjuster nut assembly (1).
  8. Adjust the thrust bearing preload. Refer to Steering Gear Worm Gear Thrust Bearing Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle or Steering Gear Worm Gear Thrust Bearing Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle .

  9. Object Number: 446337  Size: SH
  10. Using a drift in a notch, install the coupling shield retainer and lock nut.
  11. Hold the adjuster nut assembly in order to maintain alignment of the marks while tightening the coupling shield retainer and lock nut.
  12. Tighten the coupling shield retainer and lock nut securely.

Disassembly Procedure

  1. Remove the coupling shield retainer and the lock nut (2) from the adjuster nut assembly using a drift and a hammer.

  2. Object Number: 322012  Size: SH
  3. Remove the adjuster nut assembly (2) from the steering gear housing (1) using J 42882 .

  4. Object Number: 322011  Size: SH
  5. Remove the thrust support assembly (2) from the steering gear housing (1).
  6. Remove the O-ring seal (3).

Assembly Procedure

    Object Number: 322011  Size: SH

    Important: Install a new O-ring seal each time the thrust support assembly is removed from the steering gear.

  1. Lubricate the new O-ring seal (3).
  2. Install the new O-ring seal (3).
  3. Install the thrust support assembly (2).

  4. Object Number: 322012  Size: SH
  5. Connect the adjuster nut assembly (2) to the steering gear housing (1) using J 42882 .

  6. Object Number: 321974  Size: SH
  7. Install the coupling shield retainer and the lock nut (2) to the adjuster nut assembly.
  8. Using a drift in a notch, install the coupling shield retainer and the lock nut (1).
  9. Hold the adjuster nut assembly in order to maintain alignment of the marks while tightening the coupling shield retainer and lock nut (1).
  10. Tighten the coupling shield retainer and the lock nut (1) securely.
  11. Adjust the pitman shaft over-center preload. Refer to Steering Gear Pitman Shaft Over-Center Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle .
