Steering Gear Pitman Shaft Seal Replacement 708 Model

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 4646 Snap Ring Pliers


    Object Number: 313972  Size: SH
  1. Mark the position of the pitman arm to the pitman shaft.
  2. Remove the pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement in Steering Linkage.
  3. Remove the dust seal.
  4. Use the J 4646 in order to remove the snap ring (2).
  5. Position the drain pan under the steering gear (1).
  6. Turn ON the engine.
  7. Turn the steering wheel from stop to stop, bouncing the wheel off the stops.
  8. Turn OFF the engine.
  9. Remove the washers (3,5).
  10. Remove the seals (4,6).

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 6219 Pitman Shaft Seal Installer


    Object Number: 313972  Size: SH
  1. Lubricate the new seals with power steering fluid.
  2. Apply a single layer of tape to the pitman arm shaft in order to avoid damaging the seals.
  3. Install the seal (6).
  4. Install the washer (5) using the J 6219 in order to seat the seal.
  5. Install the seal (4).

  6. Object Number: 313961  Size: SH
  7. Install the washer using the J 6219 in order to seat the seal. The seal should be in far enough in order to install the snap ring.

  8. Object Number: 313972  Size: SH
  9. Install the snap ring (2).
  10. Use the following procedure in order to center the steering gear:
  11. 8.1. Turn the steering wheel until the steering wheel stops.
    8.2. Turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction until the steering wheel stops.
    8.3. Turn the wheel back 1/2 the number of turns in the previous step.
  12. Install the dust seal.
  13. Install the pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement in Steering Linkage.
  14. Bleed the system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .

Steering Gear Pitman Shaft Seal Replacement 710 Model

Removal Procedure

  1. Place a pan under the steering gear in order catch the oil.

  2. Object Number: 313985  Size: LH
  3. Remove the pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement .
  4. Use a pry tool in order to remove the dust seal (55).
  5. Remove the pitman shaft seal snap ring (56).
  6. Remove the steel washer (57).
  7. Use a pry tool in order to remove the oil seal (58). Do not scratch the bore.
  8. Inspect the pitman shaft seal surfaces for roughness or pitting.
  9. If there is pitting, replace the pitman shaft.

  10. Inspect the housing for burrs. Remove the burrs before installing the new seals.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 313985  Size: LH
  1. Lubricate the new seals with power steering fluid.
  2. Install the seal (58), using a suitable pipe as a driver. If the service kit uses a two-piece seal, place the nylon inner ring into the recess of the outer seal face.
  3. Install the steel washer (57).
  4. Install the pitman shaft seal snap ring (56).
  5. Install the dust seal (55).
  6. Use the following procedure for steering gear centering:
  7. 6.1. Turn the steering wheel until the steering wheel stops.
    6.2. While counting the number of turns, turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction until the steering wheel stops.
    6.3. Turn the steering wheel back one-half the number of turns counted in the previous step.
  8. Install the pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement .
  9. Bleed the system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
