Owners of some 1990-91 7H TopKick/Kodiak vehicles with a 3116 diesel engine (RPO LXO), hydraulic brakes (RPO JE3), and power steering (RPO N40) may experience a power steering pump reservoir leak due to an air build up in the steering gear.
To correct this condition, the power steering reservoir cap should be replaced with a new cap (P/N 26018909) and hose (P/N 15654401).
1. Cut 50 in. (127.0 cm) of 3/16 in. (4.8 mm) I.D. rubber hose (P/N 15654401 or equivalent) and install it onto the replacement cap (P/N 26018909). Clamp the hose to the cap with a hose clamp (P/N 1648216 or equivalent).
2. Remove the original power steering pump cap and replace it with the new cap/hose assembly.
3. Insert one (1) 16.0 in. (40.6 cm) nylon tie strap (acquire locally) inside the upper corner of the radiator side support and fasten the hose to the top of the support (Figure 1). Use one (1) 8.0 in. (20.3 cm) nylon tie strap (acquire locally) to fasten the hose to the power steering reservoir bracket (Figure 1).

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
