Power Steering System Flushing Saginaw with Integral Reservoir

Tools Required

    • J 42971 Quick Disconnect Tool
    • The J 42971 (Quick connect Release Tool) is inserted at the release sleeve to disconnect the power steering lines.

       Important: Always clean the connectors and lubricate the tool end in power steering fluid when inserting into the coupling.

       Important: Check all power steering system quick connect connections by trying to pull the hose assembly out of the fitting using a firm hand tug. Repeat the step if the connector is pulled out of the male fitting. If the problem persists, inspect and replace the hose assembly if the quick connect is damaged, the seals or quick connect release sleeve and collar These are available through GM SPO.

  1. Raise the front of the vehicle until the wheels are free to turn. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  2. Object Number: 219040  Size: SH

    Important: Plug the connector port on the pump in order to prevent dirt from entering the system.

    Important: Position a large container underneath the hose in order to catch the draining fluid.

  3. Remove the fluid return hose (4) at the pump inlet connector.
  4. Complete the following actions simultaneously:
  5. • Run the engine at idle.
    • Turn the steering wheel from right to left.
    • Have an assistant fill the reservoir with new power steering fluid.
  6. Repeat the process until all of the foreign material is cleared from the draining fluid.
  7. If foreign material is still present in the draining fluid, flush the individual components.

  8. Install the fluid return hose(4) at the pump (2) inlet connector.
  9. Fill the system with new power steering fluid.
  10. Bleed the system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  11. Run the engine at idle.
  12. Operate the vehicle for approximately 15  minutes.
  13. Important: Plug the connection on the pump.

  14. Remove the pump return hose at the pump inlet.
  15. Add power steering fluid to the reservoir.
  16. Inspect the draining fluid for foreign material.
  17. Important: Do not reuse any drained power steering fluid.

  18. If foreign material is found in the draining power steering fluid repeat this procedure. If foreign material continues to exist perform the following procedure:
  19. 13.1. Replace all of the hoses.
    13.2. Repair or replace all of the power steering components.

Power Steering System Flushing Hobourn with LP4 or L21

Tools Required

J 42971 Quick Disconnect Tool

Important: Always clean the connectors and lubricate the tool end in power steering fluid when inserting into the coupling.


    Object Number: 382557  Size: MH
  1. Raise the front of the vehicle until the wheels are free to turn. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Important: Position a large container under the hose in order to catch the draining fluid.

  3. Remove the fluid return hose (2) at the pump inlet connector.
  4. Notice: Do not hold the steering wheel in the full turn position longer than 5 seconds, as damage to the steering pump may result.

  5. Complete the following actions simultaneously:
  6. • Run the engine at idle.
    • Turn the steering wheel from right to left.
    • Have an assistant fill the reservoir (1) with new power steering fluid.
  7. Repeat the process until all of the foreign material is cleared from the draining fluid.
  8. If foreign material is still present in the draining fluid, flush the individual components.

  9. Install the fluid return hose (2) at the pump (6) inlet connector.
  10. Fill the system with new power steering fluid.
  11. Bleed the system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  12. Run the engine at idle.
  13. Operate the vehicle for approximately 15   minutes.
  14. Important: Plug the connection on the pump.

  15. Remove the pump return hose (2) at the pump (6) inlet.
  16. Add power steering fluid to the reservoir.
  17. Inspect the draining fluid for foreign material.
  18. Important: Do not reuse any drained power steering fluid.

  19. If foreign material is found in the draining power steering fluid repeat this procedure. If foreign material continues to exist perform the following procedure:
  20. 13.1. Replace all of the hoses.
    13.2. Repair or replace all of the power steering components.

Tools Required

Important: Always clean the connectors and lubricate the tool end in power steering fluid when inserting into the coupling.

Important: Check all power steering system quick connect connections by trying to pull the hose assembly out of the fitting using a firm hand tug. Repeat the step if the connector is pulled out of the male fitting. If the problem persists, inspect and replace the hose assembly if the quick connect is damage.

  16. Add power steering fluid to the reservoir (1).
  17. Inspect the draining fluid for foreign material.
  18. Important: Do not reuse any drained power steering fluid.

  19. If foreign material is found in the draining power steering fluid repeat this procedure. If foreign material continues to exist perform the following procedure:
  20. 13.1. Replace all of the hoses.
    13.2. Repair or replace all of the power steering components.
