Subject: | Pre-Delivery and Service Guide |
Models: | 2004 GMC Envoy XUV |
The purpose of this service bulletin is to introduce the 2004 Envoy XUV and describe the actions your Service Department will need to take to ensure that your dealership is able to fully service this exciting new model.
The Envoy XUV has a revolutionary design that makes it the most adaptable SUV ever; featuring a re-configurable all-weather cargo area with a power-sliding rear roof, a fold-down midgate with power glass and a dual function tailgate.
The electrically operated rear roof panel slides forward - up and over the forward part of the roof. This exposes the rear cargo area and allows for carrying tall loads higher than the roof. The roof is operated with either a switch in the overhead console or with the key in the tailgate key cylinder.
Important: Loads on top of the vehicle should not be carried on the sliding roof section. Loads should be carried on the roof rack using the optional Roof Rack Cargo Utility Bars (RPA V1K). The utility bars will distribute the weight of the load to the outer rails of the roof rack and can be positioned to raise the load allowing the moveable roof panel to slide under it.
The Next Generation Midgate is a fold-down gate behind the rear seats with a power-operated glass. The Midgate glass is operated by a control button located in the overhead console and rolls down inside the midgate. With the midgate and midgate glass closed, the passenger compartment is separated from any cargo or weather conditions in the cargo area. Folding down the Midgate provides additional length in the cargo area for a total of 2.7 cu. m. (95.2 cu. ft.) of cargo volume. Vehicles equipped with an available sunroof can become a virtual convertible with the sunroof, midgate glass and rear roof open.
Important: When not in use, the second row seat belts should be clipped onto the retainers mounted on the pillar just below where the seat belt passes through the trim to help keep the seat belts from getting tangled when raising or lowering the midgate.
The dual function tailgate can be opened two ways. It can drop down like a pick-up tailgate or it can swing open to the right. The tailgate includes a power-operated glass that can be raised and lowered with a control button in the overhead console or the key in the tailgate key cylinder. The glass can be lowered from the key fob by pushing the tailgate glass button twice. The tailgate glass must be lowered to drop the tailgate down. However, to swing the tailgate to the right, the tailgate glass can be in any position. Pressure switch pads located behind a molding above the license plate operate the power latches in the tailgate. To drop the tailgate down, pull on the switch pad behind the middle of the molding. To swing the tailgate to the right, pull on the switch pad behind the left end of the molding.
A number of messages are displayed on the Driver Message Center when operating the roof, tailgate or midgate. The messages give the driver information concerning the status and possible action needed to complete the operation. Below is a list of messages and the recommended actions.
• | PARK TO OPERATE ROOF - Stop the vehicle and shift into PARK (P) to operate the roof. |
• | CLEAR ROOF OBSTRUCTION - One or more obstacles are preventing the roof request from being performed. Check the roof for any obstacles. |
• | CLOSE THE ROOF - The roof must be closed to enable future roof and/or tailgate operations. |
• | OPEN THE ROOF - The roof must be opened to enable future roof and/or tailgate operations. |
• | ROOF CLOSED - The roof is closed and latched. |
• | CLOSE OR OPEN THE ROOF - The roof must be fully opened or fully closed while the vehicle is in motion. |
• | ROOF IS CLOSING - The roof is moving in the closed direction. |
• | ROOF IS OPENING - The roof is moving in the opened direction. |
• | ROOF OPENED - The roof is opened and stowed. |
• | MIDGATE AJAR - The midgate is not completely closed and latched. The midgate must be fully closed before the midgate glass will raise or lower. |
• | REAR WIPER OBSTRUCTION - Check the rear wiper. An object is preventing it from moving to the parked position. Tailgate glass operations cannot be performed if the rear wiper is not in the parked position. |
• | CLOSE THE TAILGATE - The tailgate must be closed to operate the tailgate glass. |
• | TAILGATE GLASS DOWN - The rear wiper/defog request cannot be performed because the tailgate glass is down. |
• | TAILGATE OPEN - The tailgate is in drop mode. Operate the vehicle with caution. |
• | TAILGATE AJAR - The tailgate is ajar and should be closed before moving the vehicle. |
The all-weather cargo area is trimmed with a durable, puncture- and scratch-resistant material. It features an efficient quick-drain system that allows the operator to hose out the cargo bed. The quick-drain system has three major parts. A primary trough at the base of the midgate routes water out through one-way valves that drain into the rear wheel wells. A secondary trough just in front of the midgate in the passenger compartment handles run-off when the midgate is lowered. Finally, five large valves under the floor trim panel of the cargo area route water directly through the floor of the bed and eliminate any chance of puddling in the cargo area.
The XUV has two cargo-area floor drains located behind the midgate near the sides of the cargo area. These drains should be cleaned periodically to allow water to exit the cargo area.
After hauling dirt, wood chips, pebbles etc., the operator will need to flush the cargo area floor drains with water if it becomes clogged. But first, the drain covers need to be removed by using the following steps:
Reverse the procedure to reinstall the drain covers.
If the cargo area is extremely dirty, the cargo mat can be lifted up or completely removed. Then, the drains below the mat can be flushed out with water.
To lift or remove the rear cargo mat, do the following steps:
Install the rear cargo mat by reversing this process.
Important: If the vehicle has been washed or left in the rain with the cargo area open, be sure the cargo area is dried out completely before closing the cargo area and storing the vehicle. Because the cargo area is weather tight, moisture left inside when it is closed will not readily evaporate and could result in mildew and unpleasant odors.
The Envoy XUV control modules communicate with each other over the Class 2 serial data line to provide the information necessary for the operation of electrical devices. The XUV uses the same control modules as the Envoy XL with two exceptions: the liftgate module is replaced by a tailgate module and the XUV also has a roof module.
The Envoy XUV requires no additional special tools beyond those required for the Envoy XL.
Performing a quality pre-delivery inspection is one of the most important functions your dealership can do for the customer. Most customers consider the condition of their new vehicle during delivery as a direct reflection of your dealership and your service department. A quality PDI is essential to improving a customer’s perception of your dealership and increasing his/her satisfaction with their new vehicle.
In addition to the standard PDI form, the following items require special attention:
