Condition

Important:  If the customer did not bring their vehicle in for this concern, do not proceed with this bulletin.

Some customers may comment on a noise coming from the blower motor.

Cause

GM Engineering is attempting to determine the root cause of any type of blower motor noise. GM has a need to obtain information first hand from the technician during diagnosis and BEFORE repair. As a result, this information will be used by engineering to "root cause" the customer's concern and develop/validate a field fix.

Note the following information on the repair order:

  1. Describe the noise (i.e squeal, chirp, whir, tinny, cricket-like, click, etc.)
  2. Does the noise have a tonal quality to it?
  3. On what blower speed does the noise occur?
  4. Is the noise noticeable from either the driver or passenger seat (sitting position)? Is the noise heard in any other position or vehicle location?
  5. Is the noise worse on any particular blower speed?
  6. When does the noise occur? (i.e. after start up, continuously, after vehicle sits overnight, etc.)
  7. How long does the noise last?
  8. Remove the blower motor to inspect the fan.
  9. Was any debris (paper, label, leaves, needles, foam, etc) found in the fan? Please provide detailed description of any debris found.
  10. If debris is found, remove debris from the fan. Reinstall the blower motor and verify that the customer's concern is corrected.
  11. If no debris is found, reinstall the blower motor. In addition, install an Insulator Cover per bulletin #06-01-38-001A. Evaluate the vehicle to determine if this corrects the customer's concern.
  12. Contact engineer Aaron Running at 248-941-2089 to report findings. If the customer's concern is not corrected, Aaron will provide further repair direction.
