SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Open hood.
2. Remove the altitude advance diode located on the engine wiring harness above the master cylinder. Refer to Figure 1.
3. With a small screwdriver, unlock the wire terminals from the engine wiring harness connector and remove the terminals from the connector.
4. Reverse the position of the two terminals and reinstall into the connector.
5. Reinstall the diode assembly on the engine wiring harness.
6. Locate the altitude advance diode located above the master cylinder. Refer to figure 1.
7. Follow the light green/black wires from the altitude advance diode into the wiring harness conduit (approximtely 14") to the taped splice. Do not remove tape from splice.
8. At this point you should see silver/gray tape which covers the cold advance diode. The diode has a dark green wire and light green wire with a black tracer leading to it.
9. Cut the dark green and light green wires so about 1" of the green wire is left on each side of the cold advance diode leads.
10. The cold advance diode should be soldered back into the harness with its leads reversed. That is; the light green wire on the diode should be soldered to the dark green wiring harness lead and the dark green diode lead should be soldered to the light green harness lead. This procedure can also be performed with electrical wire crimp on splices, if available.
11. Using electrical tape, tape over both solder or crimp joints to insulate them.
12. Carefully tuck the diode and wires back into the engine wiring harness conduit.
Dealers should submit an accurately filled out Warranty Repair order on each vehicle completed under this campaign.
Labor Operation *Time Trouble Number Description Allowance Code ------ ----------- --------- ---- V2261 Reverse leads in wiring harness 0.3 HR. 96 to altitude advance diode and reverse direction of cold advance diode in engine wiring harness.

Each vehicle modified in accordance with the instructions outlined in this product campaign bulletin will require a "Campaign Identification Label". Each label provides a space to include the five (5) digit Dealer Code of the dealer performing the campaign service. This information may be inserted with a typewriter or ballpoint pen.
Each "Campaign Identification Label" is to be located on the radiator core support in an area which will be visible when the vehicle is brought in for periodic servicing by the owner.
Apply "Campaign Identification Label" only on a clean dry surface.
Procedures covering this campaign are outlined in Section V of your dealership's "GMC Truck Claims Processing Manual" issued October, 1981.
Dear GMC Truck Owner:
General Motors has determined that certain early built 1984 Caballero Model Trucks equipped with a 5.7L diesel engine and federal emissions may have been manufactured incorrectly and therefore may not comply with exhaust emissions standards.
The vehicles involved may have been manufactured with two different conditions which may cause the vehicle not to comply with exhaust emission standards.
To correct these conditions your dealer will make the necessary electrical system correction to your vehicle. This service will be performed at no charge to you.
Instructions for making the correction(s) have been sent to your GMC Truck Dealer. The labor time to perform this service is approximately ten minutes. Please allow additional time for your dealer to process your vehicle.
The enclosed Owner Reply Card identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this card to your dealer will assist in making the inspection to your vehicle in the shortest possible time. If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please let us know by completing the postage paid Owner Identification Reply Card and returning it to us. Should your dealer not schedule a service date within a reasonable time, you should contact your nearest GMC Truck Zone Office either in person or by telephone for assistance. The locations and telephone numbers of the Zone Offices are listed in your Owner's Manual.
If your dealer or General Motors are unable to remedy this condition within a reasonable time, you may wish to advise the Environmental Protection Agency, at the following address: Director, Manufacturers Operation Division (EN-340), United States Environmental Protection Agency, 401 M Street, S.W. Washington,D.C., 20460. To ensure your full protection under the emission warranty made applicable to your vehicle by Federal Law, and your right to participate in future recalls, it is recommended that you have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible. Failure to do so could legally be determined to be a lack of proper maintenance of your vehicle.
We are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our product.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
