OIL PRESS LIGHT ON AT IDLE REPLACE TIMING CHAIN COVER

MODELS: 1978-1984 CABALLERO EQUIPPED WITH 3.8L V6 ENGINES RPO LD5

If a condition is encountered on the above engines where the oil pressure light comes on at idle, with the idle speed set to specifications and the engine thoroughly warmed up, the engine oil pressure should be checked. If there is a minimum of two (2) to five (5) lbs. of pressure at idle, the condition may be due to excessive clearance in the oil pump gear cavity causing the light to come on.

In most cases this condition can be repaired by replacing the timing chain cover.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
