Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Remove the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement .
  3. Remove the air cleaner duct. Refer to Engine Controls.
  4. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  5. Disconnect the radiator hoses from the engine. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  6. Disconnect the heater hoses from the engine. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  7. Remove the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  8. Important: Relief the fuel pressure. Refer to Engine Controls.

  9. Remove the fuel lines. Refer to Engine Controls.
  10. Remove the engine wiring harness connectors.
  11. Remove the brake booster hose. Refer to Vacuum Booster System.
  12. Remove the vacuum lines from the engine. Refer to Engine Controls.
  13. Remove the automatic transaxle range selector lever cable. Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
  14. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Information.
  15. Drain the engine oil.
  16. Remove the A/C compressor bolts and position the A/C compressor aside. Refer to HVAC.
  17. Remove the wiring harness grounds.
  18. Remove the three-way catalytic converter exhaust pipe from the right (rear) exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust System.
  19. Remove the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tires and Wheels.
  20. Remove the inner fender splash shield. Refer to Body Front End.
  21. Remove the stabilizer shaft links from the lower control arms. Refer to Front Suspension.
  22. Remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Power Steering Gear Unit Repair.
  23. Remove the lower ball joints from the knuckles. Refer to Front Suspension.
  24. Remove the transaxle cooler lines and bracket from the transaxle. Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
  25. Disconnect the drive axles from the transaxle. Refer to Drive Axle.
  26. Secure the drive axles to the steering knuckle/struts.
  27. Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage may cause loss of steering control which could result in an accident and possible personal injury

  28. Remove the pinch bolt/screw at the intermediate steering shaft. Refer to Steering Column.
  29. Remove the intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Refer to Steering Column.
  30. Support the engine/transaxle/frame with the transaxle table.
  31. Remove the frame-to-body bolts/screws. Refer to Body Dimensions, Frame and Underbody.
  32. Lower the engine/transaxle/frame from the vehicle.
  33. Remove the engine from the transaxle/frame to engine stand.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the engine from the transaxle/frame to engine stand.
  2. Install the lower engine/transaxle/frame from the vehicle.
  3. Install the frame-to-body bolts/screws. Refer to Body Dimensions, Frame and Underbody.
  4. Remove the transaxle table.
  5. Install the intermediate shaft to steering gear. Refer to Steering Column.
  6. Caution: When installing the intermediate shaft make sure that the shaft is seated prior to pinch bolt installation. If the pinch bolt is inserted into the coupling before shaft installation, the two mating shafts may disengage. Disengagement of the two mating shafts will cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.

  7. Install the pinch bolt/screw at the intermediate steering shaft. Refer to Steering Column.
  8. Connect the drive axles to the transaxle. Refer to Drive Axle.
  9. Install the transaxle cooler lines and bracket from the transaxle. Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
  10. Install the A/C compressor. Refer to HVAC.
  11. Install the lower ball joints from the knuckles. Refer to Front Suspension.
  12. Install the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Power Steering Gear Unit Repair.
  13. Install the stabilizer shaft links from the lower control arms. Refer to Front Suspension.
  14. Install the inner fender splash shield. Refer to Body Front End.
  15. Install the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tires and Wheels.
  16. Install the three-way catalytic converter exhaust pipe from the right (rear) exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust System.
  17. Install the wiring harness grounds.
  18. Lower the vehicle
  19. Install the automatic transaxle range selector lever cable. Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
  20. Install the brake booster hose. Refer to Vacuum Booster System.
  21. Install the vacuum lines from the engine. Refer to Engine Controls.
  22. Install the engine wiring harness connectors.
  23. Install the fuel lines. Refer to Engine Controls.
  24. Install the throttle body bracket and cables. Refer to Engine Controls.
  25. Install the engine mount strut. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  26. Connect the heater hoses to the engine. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  27. Connect the radiator hoses to the engine. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  28. Fill the cooling system with coolant. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  29. Fill the transaxle with fluid. Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
  30. Fill the engine with oil. Refer to Maintenance and Lubrication.
  31. Install the air cleaner duct. Refer to Engine Controls.
  32. Install the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement .
  33. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery.
  34. Inspect for proper fluid levels and possible fluid leaks.
