The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Some customers of vehicles equipped with LS2 engine may comment on oil consumption rates of 1 quart or more of oil consumed in 1000 miles. For vehicles that are driven aggressively (a significant amount of time where the engine is above 4000 RPM) additional oil consumption is to be expected (see newest version of bulletin 01-06-01-011 Information on Engine Oil consumption Guidelines).
For LS2 equipped vehicles where the customer has commented on oil consumption rates while driving aggressively, and they remain unsatisfied after the contents of bulletin 01-06-01-011 are reviewed with them, a new piston has been released to reduce engine oil consumption rates. Engines will need all 8 pistons and rings replaced with part numbers below:
19178305 Piston Kit
19178307 Ring Kit
For 2006 and prior vehicles where the new pistons are determined to be the correct course of action, the oil ring (spacer and rails together) MUST be replaced to have the full effect of the oil consumption improvement. If the vehicle's mileage is less than 100,000 miles, the #1 and #2 compression rings should be re-used in their original position in the same bore.
Note: 2007 and newer LS2 engines already have the updated pistons and rings.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
