Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the crankshaft pulley. Refer to Crankshaft Pulley Replacement .
  3. Remove the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .

  4. Object Number: 262436  Size: SH

    Notice: Wrap the tip of the screwdriver with tape. Failure to wrap the tip of the screwdriver with tape may cause damage to the crankshaft or the front cover.

  5. Use a screwdriver and pry out the crankshaft front oil seal.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 262423  Size: SH
  1. Lubricate the new crankshaft front oil seal (1) with Chassis Grease GM P/N 1051344 or equivalent.
  2. Using a hammer, lightly tap the crankshaft front oil seal into place.
  3. Important: Tap the oil seal in until its surface is flush with the crankshaft front oil seal retainer edge.

  4. Install the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .
  5. Install the crankshaft pulley. Refer to Crankshaft Pulley Replacement .
  6. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  9. Start the engine.
