Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the engine oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .
  2. Remove the flywheel from the engine. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .

  3. Object Number: 261773  Size: SH
  4. Remove the 5 rear main oil seal bolts.
  5. Remove the rear main oil seal housing and gasket.
  6. Remove the rear main oil seal from the housing.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 166975  Size: SH
  1. Install the new rear main seal (1) to the rear main seal housing.

  2. Object Number: 261773  Size: SH
  3. Lubricate the new crankshaft rear main oil seal with Chassis Grease GM P/N 1051344 (Canadian P/N 993037) or equivalent.
  4. Install the rear main seal housing to the cylinder block with a new gasket.

  5. Object Number: 261691  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Secure the rear main seal housing with five retaining bolts (1, 2).
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the 5  rear main seal housing bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  8. After installing the rear main oil seal housing, trim any excess gasket material from the cylinder block mating surface.
  9. Install the flywheel to the engine. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
  10. Install the engine oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .
