Removal Procedure

    Object Number: 1224503 Size: SH
  1. Remove the air hose, air cleaner to throttle body. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement for the 0.8L engine or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement for the 1.0L engine.

    2. Caution: Refer to Batteries Produce Explosive Gases Caution in the Preface section.

  2. Remove the battery.
  3. Remove the select and the shift control cable pins (1).
  4. Remove the washers (2).
  5. Disconnect the select and the shift control cable (3).
  6. Remove the cable E-rings (4).
  7. Disconnect the select and shift control cables from the cable bracket.

  8. Remove the select lever bolt (2) and select lever (1).

  9. Remove the shift interlock bolt.

    Important: Make sure the gear shift lever is in NEUTRAL.

  10. Remove the gear shift control case assembly bolts (1).
  11. Remove the gear shift control case assembly (2) and the gasket (3).

  12. Position the gear shift control case assembly to the vice with a protector.
  13. Remove the lever pin with a pin punch and a hammer (3).
  14. Remove the shift lever (1) and the boot (2).

  15. Remove the shift guide bolt (1).
  16. Remove the select/shift shaft (2).

  17. Remove the gear shift control case plate bolts (1) and the plate from the case (2).

Inspection Procedure

    Object Number: 1223650 Size: SH
  1. Inspect for worn or damaged fifth/reverse shift cam (1).
  2. Inspect for worn or damaged shift interlock plate (2).
  3. Inspect for worn or damaged select/shift lever (4).
  4. Inspect for bent or damaged select/shift shaft (3).

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 1223656 Size: SH
  1. Install the gear shift control case plate (2) onto the case.

    2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  2. Install the select/shift shaft and guide bolt (1).

    3. Tighten
    Tighten the shift guide bolt to 18-28 N·m (13-21 lb ft).

  3. Install the shift lever (1) and boot (2).
  4. Position the gear shift control case assembly to the vice with a protector.
  5. Install the lever pin with a pin punch and a hammer.

    6. Object Number: 1223660 Size: SH

    Important: Be sure to use the correct select lever bolt. There is length difference between select lever bolts.

  6. Install the gear shift control case and the select lever.

    7. Tighten
    Tighten the gear shift control case bolts (1) and select lever bolts to 18-28 N·m (13-21 lb ft).

  7. Install the shift interlock bolt (1).

    8. Tighten
    Tighten the shift interlock bolt to 18-28 N·m (13-21 lb ft).

  8. Install the select lever (1).

    9. Object Number: 1224503 Size: SH
  9. Connect the select and the shift control cable (4).
  10. Install the battery.
  11. Install the air hose, air cleaner to throttle body. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement for the 0.8L engine or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement for the 1.0L engine.
