Removal Procedure

    Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
  2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Supplemental Inflatable Restraint Description .
  3. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  4. Remove the tilt steering column lever. Refer to Tilt Lever Replacement - On Vehicle .
  5. Remove the screws that retain the lower steering column trim cover to the steering column.
  6. Remove the lower steering column trim cover.
  7. Tilt the trim cover down and slide it back in order to disengage the locking tabs.
  8. Remove the screws that retain the upper steering column trim cover to the steering column.
  9. Remove the ignition lock cylinder assembly from the upper steering column trim cover. Refer to Steering Column Unit Repair- Tilt.

  11. Remove the upper steering column trim cover.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 779  Size: SH
  1. Install the upper steering column trim cover.
  2. Install the ignition lock assembly to the upper steering column trim cover. Refer to Steering Column Unit Repair- Tilt.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the screws that retain the upper steering column trim cover to the steering column.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 1.4 N·m (12 lb in).

  6. Install the lower steering column trim cover.
  7. Install the screws that retain the lower steering column trim cover to the steering column.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 6 N·m (53 lb in).

  9. Install the tilt steering column lever. Refer to Tilt Lever Replacement - On Vehicle .
  10. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  11. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Supplemental Inflatable Restraint Description .
  12. Connect the battery negative cable.
