  1. Turn ignition ON
  2. Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock.

Is power assist present?

Does the power assist feel erratic?

Caution: DC and AC high-voltage is present. To reduce the risk of severe shocks and burns, the high-voltage system should be disabled any time service work is being performed on or around the high-voltage system. When in doubt, always disable the high-voltage system. The 12-volt system will still be active after the high-voltage system has been disabled.

Refer to High Voltage Disabling in HVAC Systems with A/C Manual.

  1. Disconnect P/S pump high voltage cable from the power steering control module (PSCM).
  2. Inspect for damaged terminals or cable.

Is the cable or the terminals damaged?

Go to Step 4

Go to Step 5

Repair terminals if disfigured or corroded, otherwise replace P/S pump.

System OK

  1. Perform Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering Pump Insulation Test in Power Steering Systems.
  2. If test passes, return to this point in this test.
