Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 24420-C Crankshaft
Pulley Hub Puller
- Remove the drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
.
Important: If only replacing the crankshaft pulley, do not remove the fan shroud
and the engine cooling fan.
- Remove the fan shroud. Refer to
Fan Shroud Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Remove the engine cooling fan. Refer to
Fan Clutch Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Raise the vehicle. Refer
to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General
Information.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley bolts.
- Remove the hub bolt and washer from the crankshaft pulley.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley.
Notice: To prevent damage to the end of the crankshaft when using a crankshaft
balancer removal tool install a bolt in the crankshaft. Use a shorter bolt
with the same threads as the crankshaft balancer bolt. This bolt will allow
a place for the tool to push against. The shorter bolt is to keep from going
past the threads in the crankshaft and damaging the crankshaft threads.
- Position the J 24420-B
puller tool onto the crankshaft hub.
- Turn the center puller
screw clockwise in order to remove the hub from the crankshaft.
- Inspect the crankshaft hub for damage.
Replace if necessary.
- Remove the key from the crankshaft.
- Inspect the crankshaft key for damage.
Replace if necessary.
Installation Procedure
Tools Required
J 29113 Crankshaft
Pulley Hub Installer
- Coat the engine front
cover seal contact area with engine oil.
- Apply RTV sealer GM P/N 1052917
to the keyway on the crankshaft.
- Install the key into the keyway on the crankshaft.
- Install the pulley hub
into position over the key on the crankshaft.
- Install the J 29113
through the hub and into the crankshaft
so that at least 6 mm (0.24 in) of threads are engaged.
- Pull the crankshaft pulley hub into position against the J 29113
.
- Remove the J 29113
from the crankshaft.
- Make sure that the hub is seated against the crankshaft.
- Position the crankshaft
pulley over the crankshaft pulley hub.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the crankshaft
pulley bolts and the hub bolt and washer.
Tighten
• | Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft). |
• | Tighten the crankshaft pulley to hub bolt to 105 N·m
(77 lb ft). |
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the engine cooling fan. Refer to
Fan Clutch Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Install the fan shroud. Refer to
Fan Shroud Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Install the drive belt. Refer to
