Removal Procedure
- Release the parking brake.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly from the vehicle. Refer
to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the drum.
- If the drum does not remove easily, then
complete the following steps:
5.1. | Remove the rear brake adjuster access hole plug. |
5.2. | Insert a screwdriver through the hole in the backing plate. Hold
the brake shoe adjuster actuator away from the park brake lever strut. |
5.3. | Reduce the brake shoe adjustment by turning the park brake lever
strut with another screwdriver. |
- If the drum is rusted or corroded to the hub and the backing plate,
then complete the following steps:
6.1. | Insert 2 bolts in the 2 holes of the drum. |
6.2. | Turn the 2 bolts at the same time in the clockwise direction
in order to loosen the drum from the backing plate. |
- Inspect the drum. Refinish or replace as necessary. Refer to
Brake Drum Surface and Wear Inspection
.
- Inspect the brake shoes and the drum brake components. Replace
parts as necessary.
Installation Procedure
- Install the drum.
- Install the tire and wheel assembly to the vehicle. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
