Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture
    • J 35944-A Oil Cooler Flushing Tool
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  3. Remove the shift linkage from the transmission.

  5. Disconnect the wiring connections from the transmission.

  6. Object Number: 104328  Size: SH
  7. Install the J 28467-360 to the transmission.

  8. Object Number: 104580  Size: SH
  9. Remove the upper transmission to engine bolts.
  10. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  11. Remove both of the tire and the wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  12. Remove the splash shields. Refer to Wheelhouse Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  13. Remove the front suspension crossmember. Refer to Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement in Front Suspension.
  14. Remove the engine mount strut. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 2.4L.
  15. Remove both of the drive axles from the transmission and the support. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
  16. Remove the engine to transmission brace. Refer to Automatic Transmission Brace Replacement .
  17. Remove the shift cable bracket. Refer to Transmission Control Replacement .
  18. Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  19. Remove the transmission converter cover and the torque converter bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement .
  20. Remove the transmission cooler pipes. Refer to Oil Feed Pipes Replacement .
  21. Remove the brake hose bracket to body.
  22. Remove the transmission mount to body bolts. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement .
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24. Lower the transmission with the engine support fixture enough to remove the transmission.
  25. Caution: Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in the Preface section.

  26. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  27. Support the transmission.

  29. Remove the transmission to engine bolts.

  31. Remove the transmission.
  32. Flush the transmission cooler and the lines with the J 35944-A , or equivalent, whenever the transmission has been removed for overhaul or replacement. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test .

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture

  1. Place a thin film of chassis grease GM P/N 1051344, or the equivalent, on the torque converter pilot hub.
  2. Ensure that the torque converter is properly seated in the oil pump.

  3. Object Number: 104581  Size: SH
  4. Position the transmission in the vehicle.

  5. Object Number: 104580  Size: SH
  6. Install the lower transmission to engine bolts.
  7. Lower the vehicle.

  8. Object Number: 104328  Size: SH
  9. Use the J 28467-360 in order to raise the transmission.
  10. Caution: Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in the Preface section.

  11. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  12. Install the transmission mount to body bolts. Refer to Oil Feed Pipes Replacement .
  13. Install the brake hose bracket to body.
  14. Install the transmission cooler pipes. Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Pipes Replacement .
  15. Install the torque converter to flywheel bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement .
  16. Install the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  17. Install the shift cable bracket.
  18. Tighten

        • Tighten the bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
        • Tighten the nut to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  19. Install the engine to transmission brace. Refer to Automatic Transmission Brace Replacement .
  20. Install both of the drive axles. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts.
  21. Install the front suspension crossmember. Refer to Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement in Front Suspension.
  22. Install the engine mount strut to the suspension support. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement .
  23. Install the splash shields. Refer to Wheelhouse Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  24. Install both of the tire and the wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  25. Lower the vehicle.

  26. Object Number: 104580  Size: SH
  27. Install the upper transmission to engine bolts.
  28. Tighten
    Tighten all of the bolts to 90 N·m (66 lb ft).

  29. Remove the J 28467-360 from the transmission.

  30. Object Number: 582134  Size: SH
  31. Connect the wiring connections to the transmission.
  32. Install the shift linkage to the transmission.
  33. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  34. Connect the negative battery cable.
  35. Fill the transmission with Dexron® III.
  36. Inspect the transmission oil level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Check .
  37. Apply the brakes. Start the engine. Shift the transmission from R (Reverse) to D (Drive).
  38. Install the transmission mount pipe expansion bolt. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement .
