Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the starter solenoid click?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit from the starter solenoid.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit of the starter and a good ground.
  4. Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 7

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the park/neutral position (PNP) switch or the clutch pedal position (CPP) switch.
  3. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper between the crank voltage circuit of the appropriate switch and the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit.
  4. Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 8

  1. Connect a test lamp between the crank voltage circuit and the PNP switch or the CPP switch and a good ground.
  2. Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 11

Test the crank voltage circuit of the PNP switch or the CPP switch for a high resistance or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing or Wiring Repairs.

Inspect the PNP switch or the CPP switch for proper operation.
