Some 1985 Monte Carlos with 4.3L engines way exhibit an engine surge condition when the cruise control is operating. This condition is more noticeable at low speeds.
Many items can cause a cruise control surge condition, so a general cruise system inspection should be made first. Some things to look for are:
1. Proper cruise control cable routing (no kinks or sharp beads.)
2. Proper cruise Lontrol cable adjustment.
3. Vacuum hoses to accumulator or servo leaking or resLricted.
4. Binding speedometer cable.
Refer to the 1985 Shop Manual for specifications on Items #1 and #2.
A new cruise control module (P/N 25031946) is available Lo repair the surge condition. Early production vehicles used P/N 2%031953.
A road test should be performed to verify that the surge condition has been repaired.
Use applicable labor operation.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
