Brake Drum Replacement Hub Design with ABS

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .

  3. Object Number: 176270  Size: SH
  4. Remove the 2 screws (2) which are securing the drum (1).
  5. Release the parking brake.
  6. Remove the backing plate plug.

  7. Object Number: 176272  Size: SH
  8. Insert a screwdriver into the backing plate plug until it contacts the shoe lever stopper.
  9. Push the screwdriver in the direction of the arrow.

  10. Object Number: 197906  Size: SH
  11. Insert two 8 mm (0.3 in ) bolts (1) into the drum.
  12. Tighten the 2 bolts in order to remove the drum from the hub.
  13. Inspect the brake drum. Replace the drum if necessary. Refer to Brake Drum Inspection .
  14. Inspect the brake components. Replace the components if any of the following conditions exist:
  15. • Wear
    • Distortion
    • Cracks
    • Corrosion

Installation Procedure

  1. Put a flat screwdriver between the rod and the ratchet. Push down on the ratchet to maximize the lining-to-drum clearance.

  2. Object Number: 176274  Size: SH
  3. Move the brake shoe stopper back to its original position.
  4. Install the drum.
  5. Secure the drum with two screws.
  6. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Press the brake pedal three to five times with about 30 kg (66 lb) of pressure in order to obtain proper drum-to-shoe clearance.
  9. Adjust the park brake. Refer to Parking Brake Lever Adjustment in Park Brake.

Brake Drum Replacement Hubless Design Without ABS

Removal Procedure

    • J 2619-01 Slide Hammer
    • J 34866 Wheel Hub Remover
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  3. Object Number: 176283  Size: SH
  4. Use a chisel in order to remove the spindle nut dust cap (1).

  5. Object Number: 176287  Size: SH
  6. Use a punch in order to unstake the spindle nut (2).

  7. Object Number: 176286  Size: SH
  8. Remove the spindle nut (3) and washer (4) from the spindle (5). Discard the spindle nut.
  9. Release the park brake.
  10. Remove the backing plate plug.

  11. Object Number: 176272  Size: SH
  12. Insert a screwdriver into the backing plate plug until it contacts the shoe lever stopper.
  13. Push the screwdriver in the direction of the arrow.

  14. Object Number: 176288  Size: SH
  15. Use a J 2619-01 and a J 34866 in order to remove the drum.
  16. Use two wheel nuts in order to secure the J 34866 to the drum (1).
  17. Inspect the brake drum. Replace the drum if necessary. Refer to Brake Drum Inspection .
  18. Inspect the brake components. Replace the components if any of the following conditions exist:
  19. • Wear
    • Distortion
    • Cracks
    • Corrosion

Installation Procedure

  1. Put a flat screwdriver between the rod and ratchet. Push down on the ratchet in order to maximize lining-to-drum clearance.

  2. Object Number: 176274  Size: SH
  3. Move the brake shoe stopper back to its original position.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the drum. Secure the drum with a washer and a new spindle nut.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the spindle nut to 80 to 120 N·m (58 to 86.5 lb ft).

  7. Stake the spindle nut.
  8. Important: If the spindle nut dust cap is does not fit or is damaged, install a new dust cap.

  9. Use a plastic hammer in order to install the spindle nut dust cap. Tap the collar of the dust cap until the collar contacts the brake drum.
  10. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Press the brake pedal 3 to 5 times with about 30 kg (66 lb) of pressure to obtain a proper lining-to-drum clearance.
  13. Adjust the park brake. Refer to Parking Brake Lever Adjustment in Park Brake.
