Removal Procedure

    Caution: When you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, you must disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause air bag deployment, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

  1. Disable the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR). Refer to Disabling the SIR System .
  2. Remove the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
  3. Remove the steering wheel from the column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column -- Standard.

  4. Object Number: 355245  Size: SH
  5. Loosen the 2 upper steering column mounting bolts.
  6. Slightly lower the steering column.
  7. Remove the 5 screws from the lower steering column cover (2) in order to remove the upper cover (1) and the lower cover (2).

  9. Disconnect the SIR coil and the combination switch electrical connectors (2).
  10. Loosen the SIR coil and combination switch electrical harness wire bands (1).

  11. Object Number: 355249  Size: SH
  12. Remove the 3 screws in order to remove the SIR coil and the combination switch (2) from the column.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 355249  Size: SH
  1. Use the 3 screws in order to install the SIR coil and the combination switch (2) to the column.

  2. Object Number: 355247  Size: SH
  3. Connect the SIR coil and the combination switch electrical connectors (2).
  4. Secure the harness (2) to the column with the wire bands (1).

  5. Object Number: 355245  Size: SH
  6. Install the upper column cover (1) and the lower column cover (2).
  7. Secure the column covers with the 5 screws.
  8. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  9. Tighten the 2 upper steering column mounting bolts.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the upper steering column mounting bolts to 14 N·m (10 lb ft).

  11. Install the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.
  12. Install the lower trim cover to the steering column.
  13. Secure the lower trim cover with the 3 screws.
  14. Install the steering wheel to the steering column. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  15. Enable the SIR. Refer to Enabling the SIR System .
