J 1859-A Steering Wheel Puller

Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  1. Disable the SIR. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Ensure that the front tires are in the straight-ahead position.
  3. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement in SIR.

  4. Object Number: 349624 Size: SH
  5. Remove the nut that retains the steering wheel to the steering shaft.
  6. Use paint in order to mark the alignment of the steering wheel (1) to the steering shaft (2). During installation, use these marks as a guide.
  7. Notice: When removing the steering wheel, use only the specified steering wheel puller. Do not hammer on the end of the steering column shaft. Hammering could loosen the plastic injections which maintain the steering column rigidity.

    Object Number: 349628 Size: SH
  8. Install the J 1859-A to the steering wheel (1).
  9. Remove the steering wheel from the steering shaft.

Installation Procedure

  1. Ensure that the front tires are in the straight-ahead position.
  2. If necessary, center the SIR coil. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Coil Centering - Off Vehicle .

  3. Object Number: 349624 Size: SH
  4. If you are replacing the steering wheel, copy the alignment mark (1) from the old steering wheel to the new steering wheel.
  5. Notice: When installing the steering wheel, ensure that the 2 tabs on the SIR coil align with the 2 slots on the steering wheel mounting surface. Failure to align the tabs may cause incorrect alignment of some components during installation. This may damage the SIR coil.

  6. Install the steering wheel to the steering shaft. Fit the 2 tabs on the SIR coil into the 2 slots on the steering wheel mounting surface. Align the mark on the steering wheel (1) with the mark on the steering shaft (2).
  7. Ensure that the steering wheel and the front tires are in the straight-ahead position.
  8. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  9. Install the nut in order to retain the steering wheel to the steering shaft.
  10. Tighten
Tighten the nut to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  11. Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement in SIR.
  12. Enable the SIR. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
