Removal Procedure
Notice: Use care when performing service operations on or around parking brake
cables. Damage to the plastic coating will reduce corrosion protection and
if the damaged area passes through the seal, increased parking brake effort
could result. Contacting the coating with sharp-edged tools, or with sharp
surfaces of the vehicle underbody, should be avoided.
- Remove the parking brake lever trim bezel. Refer to
Parking Brake Lever Bezel Replacement
in Instrument
Panel, Gages and Console.
- Loosen the adjuster nut
(3) on the parking brake lever assembly.
- Remove the parking brake cable (2) from the parking brake lever
assembly equalizer plate (4).
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the rear tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires
and Wheels.
- Remove the two guide brackets
from the cable (2).
- Remove the cable grommet (1) from the floor pan. Pull the cable
out.
- Remove the drums. Refer to
Brake Drum Replacement
in Drum Brakes.
- Remove the parking brake cable from the shoe lever.
- Squeeze the parking brake
cable retainer (1) with pliers. Remove the parking brake cable from the backing
plate.
Installation Procedure
- Install the parking brake cable (1) into the backing plate. Secure
the parking brake cable with the cable retainer.
- Install the parking brake cable to the shoe lever.
- Install the parking brake cable into the floor plan. Install the
grommet into the floor plan.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the two
guide brackets to the cable. Secure the brackets with bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the parking brake cable guide bracket bolts to 15 N·m
(11 lb ft).
- Install the drum. Refer to
Brake Drum Replacement
in Drum Brakes.
- Install the rear tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires
and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the parking brake cable to the equalizer plate.
- Adjust the parking brake. Refer to
Parking Brake Lever Adjustment
.
- Install the parking brake lever trim bezel. Refer to
Parking Brake Lever Bezel Replacement
in Instrument
