    • J 34013-96 Alignment Rod

    Object Number: 221247 Size: SH

Caution: Strut springs are under high tension. Do not remove the strut piston rod top under the support nut without using J 34013-B strut spring compressor.

  1. Mount the J 34013-B and a J 34013-88 into J 3289-20 .
  2. Use two locking pins to attach the strut assembly to the J 34013-B and the J 34013-88 .

  3. Object Number: 175953 Size: SH
  4. Turn the compressor forcing screw while rotating the strut support in order to properly align the mounting studs (1) and then guide them through the compressor hood.
  5. Align the mounting studs (1) with the correct pattern in the hood.
  6. Install the J 3289-20 onto the coil spring
  7. Compress the strut spring approximately 13 mm (0.5 in) by turning the compressor forcing screw.
  8. Remove the strut nut from the top of the strut assembly.
  9. Remove the following items:
  10. • The lock washer
    • The strut stopper
    • The spacer
  11. Place J 34013-96 on the damper rod and guide the damper rod through the strut spring upper seat while decompressing the strut spring.

  12. Object Number: 175957 Size: MH
  13. Release the strut spring from the J 34013-B and remove the following items from the strut assembly as needed:
  14. • The bearing seat (5)
    • The upper washer (6)
    • The bearing seal (7)
    • The bearing (8)
    • The lower washer (9)
    • The spacer (10)
    • The upper spring seat (11)
    • The strut cover (13)
    • The bumper stopper (14)

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 3289-20 Holding Fixture
    • J 34013-B Strut Compressor
    • J 34013-88 Strut Compressor Adapter
    • J 34013-20 Damper Rod Clamp
    • J 34013-96 Alignment Rod

    Object Number: 221247 Size: SH
  1. Attach the strut assembly to J 34013-B and J 34013-88 using the two locking pins.
  2. Install the spring onto the strut assembly. Ensure that the spring is properly seated onto the strut spring lower seat (16).
  3. Pull the damper rod to the full, extended length.
  4. Install J 34013-20 .
  5. Install the following items:
  6. • The bump stopper (14)
    • The strut cover (13)
    • The upper spring seat (11)
  7. Position the arrow on the upper spring seat (11) to point toward the arm of the fixture.
  8. Install the following items to the strut assembly:
  9. • The bearing spacer (10)
    • The bearing lower washer (9)
    • The bearing (8)
    • The bearing seal (7)
    • The bearing upper washer (6)
    • The bearing seat (5)
    • The support (4)
  10. Ensure that all of the components are centered and properly aligned.

  11. Object Number: 175953 Size: SH
  12. Turn the compressor forcing screw while rotating the strut support in order to properly align the mounting studs (1) and guide them through the compressor hood. Align the mounting studs (1) with the correct pattern in the hood assembly.
  13. Insert J 34013-96 through the upper strut assembly and screw it into the strut damper shaft.
  14. Compress the strut spring by turning the compressor forcing screw and guide the damper shaft through the upper strut assembly with J 34013-96 . Compress the strut spring until approximately 25 mm (1 in) of the damper shaft is visible above the upper strut assembly.
  15. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  16. Remove the J 34013-96 and install the strut stopper and the strut nut.
  17. Tighten
Tighten the strut nut to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  18. Remove the J 34013-20 from the damper rod.
  19. Decompress the strut spring.
  20. Remove the strut assembly from J 34013-B and the J 34013-88 .
