Inspect the brake shoe linings whenever the brake drums are removed and as suggested in the maintenance schedule located in the Maintenance and Lubrication section.
Inspect brake shoe linings for the following conditions:
• | Cracks |
• | Chipping |
• | Glazing |
• | Uneven wear |
All of these conditions could be signs of serious problems in the drum brake assembly. If any of these conditions are noted, replace the brake shoe linings and inspect all of the components of the rear brakes for cause and further problems.
Replace the brake shoe lining if the thickness of the lining is less than specifications. The brake shoe and lining assemblies should always be replaced in axle sets. To check for shoe lining thickness, use the following procedure:
Shoe lining material thickness (minimum): 1 mm (0.04 in).
