J 44586 Power Steering Gear Oil Seal Remover/Installer

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the intake manifold cover. Refer to Intake Manifold Cover Replacement.
  2. Remove the drive belt from the vehicle. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
  3. Remove the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement
  4. Remove the drive belt idler pulley. Refer to Drive Belt Idler Pulley Replacement.

  6. Remove the 3 bolts (1) and the front engine lift bracket (2).

  7. Object Number: 1775236  Size: SH
  8. Remove the nut (2) and the power steering hose routing clip (1) from the generator bracket stud.

  9. Object Number: 1775144  Size: SH
  10. Loosen the power steering pipe fitting from the power steering pump and position aside.
  11. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.

  13. Disconnect the power steering gear inlet pipe routing clip from the power steering gear outlet pipe bracket.

  15. Remove the power steering gear inlet/outlet pipe retaining bolt (1) and disconnect the inlet pipe (2) from the power steering gear.
  16. Remove the power steering gear inlet pipe from the vehicle.

    Notice: Clean the power steering gear inlet and outlet ports thoroughly of any debris. Failure to do so could result in contamination and damage to the power steering system components.

  18. Install the seal extraction end of the J 44586 (2) to the power steering gear oil seal (1).

  20. Extract the power steering gear oil seal (1) from the power steering gear using the J 44586 (2) with the aid of a flat-bladed tool (3) for additional leverage.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1492057  Size: SH
  1. Install the NEW power steering gear oil seal (1) to the power steering gear using the seal installation end of the J 44586  (2).

  2. Object Number: 1492058  Size: SH
  3. Ensure the power steering gear oil seals (1) are fully seated in the power steering gear.
  4. Position the power steering gear inlet pipe into the vehicle.
  5. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

    Notice: The inlet and outlet hoses must not be twisted during installation. Do not bend or distort the inlet or outlet hoses to make installation easier. Failure to follow these procedures could result in component damage.

  6. Install the inlet pipe (2) to the power steering gear and install the retaining bolt (1). Prior to tightening the retaining bolt (1), rotate the outlet pipe (4) clockwise/down so it touches the inlet pipe (2). Verify the hoses are still touching after the retaining bolt is tight.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering gear inlet/outlet pipe retaining bolt to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  8. Connect the power steering gear inlet pipe routing clip to the power steering gear outlet pipe bracket.
  9. Lower the vehicle.

  10. Object Number: 1775144  Size: SH
  11. Position the line and fitting into the power steering pump.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the pipe fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  13. Install the power steering hose routing clip (1) to the generator bracket stud and install the nut (2).
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 5 N·m (45 lb in).

  15. Position the front engine lift bracket (2) and install the 3 bolts (1).
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the engine lift bracket bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  17. Install the drive belt idler pulley. Refer to Drive Belt Idler Pulley Replacement.
  18. Install the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement.
  19. Install the drive belt from the vehicle. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
  20. Install the intake manifold cover. Refer to Intake Manifold Cover Replacement.
  21. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding.
