Subject: | Fuel Gauge Reads Backwards After Fuel Level Sensor or Fuel Pump Replacement |
Models: | 2007 Chevrolet Malibu |
with 5 as the 6th Digit of the VIN |
(Indicates 4 Door Sedan) |
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
At this time, the GMSPO parts catalog lists the incorrect fuel pump module and fuel level sensor for the 2007 Malibu Sedan (Listed as Z69 in Parts Catalog). The incorrect parts will physically fit but the fuel level sensor resistance is backwards when compared to the original sensor. As a result, the fuel gauge will read backwards if the incorrect parts are installed.
If this issue is experienced, ensure that the correct part numbers were installed during previous repairs. The correct part numbers are:
Fuel Level Sensor 19167662
Fuel Pump Module 19167449 - (Available in GMSPO as of 11/15/2006 but a SPAC Case may be needed)
These part numbers, or any future part numbers, should be used when replacing the fuel level sensor or fuel pump module on a 2007 Malibu Sedan (Indicated with a 5 as the 6th digit of the VIN). The parts catalog will reflect these changes in the next 2 - 3 months. If an incorrect fuel level sensor or fuel pump module was installed during previous repairs, replace the necessary component using the necessary part number above.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
