Tools Required
Removal Procedure
- Remove the automatic transmission. Refer to
Transmission Replacement
.
- Install the
J 38122-A
to the crankshaft balancer in order to keep the flexplate from rotating when removing the flexplate bolts.
- Have an assistant hold the
J 38122-A
with a breaker bar.
Important: It may be necessary to remove the chamfer (bevel) from the edge of an 18 mm socket in order to get full socket engagement on the thin headed flexplate bolts.
- Remove the flexplate bolts. If reusing the old flexplate discard the flexplate bolts, NEW bolts will need to be installed.
Important: It is not necessary to orientate the flexplate to the crankshaft. It is balanced separately from the engine.
- Remove the flexplate.
- Clean the thread adhesive from the flywheel bolt holes. Use a nylon bristle brush to clean the holes in the crankshaft
Important: Do not damage the outside diameter of the crankshaft or chamber with any tool.
- Pry the crankshaft rear oil seal with a flat-bladed tool.
Installation Procedure
- Lubricate the outside diameter of the NEW crankshaft seal with clean engine oil.
- Using the
J 42067
, press the NEW crankshaft seal into the housing. The
J 42067
will establish the depth of the seal.
- Install the
J 38122-A
to the crankshaft balancer in
order to keep the flexplate from rotating when tightening the flexplate bolts.
- Install the flexplate.
- Have an assistant hold the
J 38122-A
with a breaker bar.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the NEW flexplate bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 53 N·m (39 lb ft) plus an additional 25 degrees using
J 45059
.
- Install the automatic transmission. Refer to
Transmission Replacement
