Circuit Description

The Traction Off indicator is controlled by the instrument cluster via serial data messages from the body control module (BCM). When the TCS switch is pressed, the BCM commands the instrument cluster to turn ON the Traction Off indicator.

The Traction OFF indicator will also turn ON during the instrument cluster bulb check. When the ignition switch is turned to ON, the Traction Off indicator will turn ON for approximately 3 seconds and then turn OFF.

Diagnostic Aids

The malfunction must be present during diagnosis in order to prevent unnecessary parts replacement. Always begin diagnosis with Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle.

Test Description

The number below refers to the step number on the diagnostic table.

  1. This step tests if the instrument panel cluster (IPC) is able to turn OFF the Traction Off indicator.

Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition for 5 seconds.
  2. Turn ON the ignition while observing the Traction Off indicator.

Does the Traction Off indicator illuminate for 2 seconds and then turn OFF?

  1. Disconnect the harness connector of the TCS switch
  2. Momentarily ground the TCS switch signal circuit.

Does the Traction Off indicator turn OFF and ON?

Replace the TCS switch. Refer to Electronic Traction Control Switch Replacement .

Test for a short to ground in the TCS switch signal circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Select the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Special Functions menu on the scan tool.
  3. Command the IPC lamps OFF.

Does the Traction Off indicator turn OFF?

Replace the instrument panel cluster (IPC). Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.

  1. Turn OFF the ignition for 5 seconds.
